RadioShack relays?

Anybody using Radio Shack relays for their comps? If so, do you have a part number or anything? I have been looking there but the highest power relay I see is only 10 amp. Thanks!

the relay gets a 12v signal from your pressure switch. since the pressure switch can't handle having the draw from the comps on it, a relay is used to turn on the comps. The relay sees the 12v when your pressure drops and it allows the other 12v 30 or 40 amp to power the comps without id having to go through the pressure switch. You're probably gonna have to read that a few times because i can't explain stuff that good. i hope i helped

Just tell them you are looking for a Automotive Bosch type relay, they will know what it is, and they do have them.

Oh yeah, and they shouldn't be more than 7-8 bucks at the absolute most.

ive bought about 3 from there in the last month in a half. My shit keeps blowing. I forgot to take pics of the last one that was in there....but the cover came off and the inside was black....Maybe its happening cause its exposed to the weather and its been raining bullets lately!

But they are 6.81 with tax where I got them....Just order them online from Jason @ SD or Matt @ Gauge! They are about same price...but you gotta pay shipping!

actually its not wattage it amperage

the compressors do have wattage. 746 watts=1 hp Viair 450 comp. =1/4 hp i think so its around 186 watts of power from one 450 compressor. The pressure switch also only pulls like half an amp and the max on the 450 is 23 amps. But u are right but just worded it wrong.

Ya ford starter solenoids are not the way to go, they are only made for momentary service, not the few minutes that it takes a compressor to fill up a tank.

Ive bought the bosch style relays from RadioShack before and havnt had any problems with them, but I prefer a name brand DEI relay or something like that from a stereo shop just so I know itll be good.

Or you could just multiply the amp draw to the voltage.

a relay is a relay is a relay... just make sure you specify a bosch "style" relay, and not an actual bosch relay. an actual bosch relay can go for $20-30, whereas a simple look alike is just a couple bucks. btw, i use ford starter solinoids and they work fine. internaly, that ford starter solinoid IS a bosch style relay, just a little bigger and more heavy duty. if you rip the 2 of them apart, you'll see the same shit inside. a coil, an armature and a magnet. theyre all basicly the same thing. the only thing different you get with a name brand is a tougher (more weather resistant) casing, and the bosch or dei logo stamped on it.

I've been running radioshack relays for about 4 or 5 months now and no problems...

Yeah, I'm gonna mount my tank underneath, but I think I will put my comps in the bed and just run everything down to it. Winter is coming, and I don't think all that salt is gonna be good for it. thanks for the advice everybody!

The coil, armature, and magnet are all in the starter.

nooooooooooo! if your mechanic told you that shit, he's ripping you off. there is a starter coil, but thats something different. a starter solonoid is just a big relay made to take the switching load off your ignition switch. its the SAME THING as a standard 5 pin bosch style relay, fool.

Ford starter solenoids will NOT work. They are NOT the same, and they are KNOWN to everyone that has EVER tried to use them as failing within 2 months. End of story.

the reason they fail is cause they either get wet or arent grounded properly. i used them for all kinds of shit in my last car http://members.sounddomain.com/audiounderground and never had a problem. but maybe its just me.

I don't have a mechanic I do it all myself and I have no idea what u are talking about rippin me off. But like Dave said they are only ment to be used for short moments like starters are. Are compressors normally run for 2 minutes plus. I don't think anyone holds there starter for 2 minutes. U need a continous duty solenoid so I guess u are the fool and the one who should talk to your mechanic

The armature is the bigass thing on the starter drive that is moved to engage with the flywheel. The solenoid is normally on the firewall or near the battery.
