Here is a little write up/explanation on how to swap your stock CS130D alternator for an AD244 alternator off of most of the full size trucks.

For those of you that NEED a bigger alternator, weather it be because of off-road accessories (winches, lights, etc) or because you need the extra amperage due to a bigger sound system, you would probably upgrade to an aftermarket alternator to meet your needs. Well, unless you are paying $300+ for a built alternator with a good stator and regulator put in, you will loose voltage at idle when you purchase the upgraded one. This is where most people have their concern, especially you off-road guys.

For example, when you put a 160 amp stator in a stock CS130D (4.3L) case, you will get the 160 amps, but only at about 1000 engine RPM's. Our 4.3L's idle at ~550-600, so the output is a lot less, voltage and amperage. I've found that my "built" CS130D only put out 45 amps and 12.8v at idle, when I needed a LOT more than that to keep my lights from dimming at idle.

So, our goal here is to get output (amperage and voltage) at idle as well as our required output at speeds greater than idle. With the AD244, you can have the best of both worlds.

*You can pick up a used AD244 alternator from your local junkyard for ~$40-$50, depending on mileage/condition*

The AD244 alternator came off of several full size pickups, from different years. There were two versions of the alternator made, a 130A version and a 145A version. You can call your local junkyard/salvage yard and ask them what it came off of, how many miles are on it, and what version it is (130A or 145A). Here is a link to everything you need to know (including what vehicles it came off of) about the AD244 (thank juddspaintballs for the link)

http://www.wai-wetherill.com/products/partimage.cfm?wai_num=1-2419-21DR

*The AD244 alternator will bolt right up to the stock alternator bracket on the 4.3L with NO modifications to the bracket. The only thing that is different is that you won't be using the 3rd bolt that is on the backside of the alternator. The CS130D has this, but the AD244 doesn't. You won't have any troubles with the bolt not being there.*

*The AD244 uses the same wire harness as the CS130D. It is a plug-and-play application.*

Now, I know what you guys are thinking..... "well dude, I need wayy more than 145 amps." That's what I was thinking too when I was doing this mod. I've got a decent sized sound system in the truck and some aftermarket fog lights on my safari bar, so I needed the extra amperage.

Bench tests have proven this alternator to put out 200+ amps at idle when cold. Yes, that's right, at idle.

When the alternator is warm it will easily put out 100 amps at idle, which is way better than the CS130D which is only capable of producing ~40 amps at idle.

It is a slightly underrated alternator (you audio guru's out there know what the term 'underrated' means and how it compares to the quality of a product). I can crank my system to the max and have no voltage issues with it when I'm at idle. I'll maintain a 14v and my lights don't dim.

--------------

Now that you have the alternator, you'll be needing a longer belt. I can't say how long of a belt you'll be needing, but the stock one won't work. If you DO get the stock belt to work (some have) I STRONGLY don't recommend it. It will put a bigger strain on the bearings in the alternator and can cause premature failure. It's worth the extra $35 for a new belt.

*You will need a belt that is 1"-1.5" longer than stock. For some reason, the lengths of belts changed from year to year (even 98+) so you'll have to do a little bit of math and figure it out on your own :p *

--------------

I also highly recommend doing the "Big 3" upgrade when doing the AD244 mod. Stock wiring CAN take the 200+amps that the AD244 puts out, but if you are having problems with it, then it is probably the wiring.

Here are some pictures of my AD244 in action:

13.96 can be lower than most would like to be.... but a stock CS130D would be gasping for air if I was treating it like that.

So, if I had things my way, every s10/blazer would have an AD244 as their alternator, even if they have a stock electrical system.

My alternator in my 95 blazer went out last night bringing home groceries! I pulled it into my yard and decided I had to try something so I went ahead and swapped the alternator I purchased in. It looks a lot bigger but it fit everywhere (95 has the radiator hose behind the alt). The stock belt worked, but the tensioner is pretty tight, I may buy a half inch longer belt today. Also I couldn't get to the left side of the bracket to open the hole up, so for now I ran a smaller bolt through it and tightened it up as well as I could. The alt puts out some awesome power! After startup in the morning it runs close to 15 volts idle and drops down to a hair over 14 when cruising. I haven't seen the voltage dip a bit even with the stereo cranked.

Two things concern me. One of them is the lower lip on my 95 is a bolt on tab, not a bracket. I've seen these break before and i really hope I don't run into something like that again. The second thing is, the back support rod that runs to the manifold won't fit on this alternator. For now though I pulled this swap off at 1 in the morning and the truck got me to work this morning!

Well I have read through this whole thread and it seems that no one has installed and AD244 alt in a first gen 2.8 v6 yet right?.... Well until now, there is... ME. As of today I have installed one in my 88 and the install was pretty easy and straight forward. I can post pics and video that I took if someone needs to know how.

Post it up. I started it but never had the time to finish figuring the wiring out. I know I needed to add a resistor inline somewhere but thats as far as I got.

#609 ·
sweet, what did the alt come from?

#608 ·
anything in the 2.5 iron duke?

Hey guys a lot of good info here!

My alt went out this last week and Im wanting to do this upgrade. Im a little worried about buying used and I want to get a warranty with the new one.

Does anyone know where the best place is to buy the (Delphi) or AC Delco Ad244 Alt with a warranty? I have found a lot of different makes of it on the Advance Auto website, but want to make sure to get the right one. Seems like i can find a lot of Delco copy DG44's out there warranties.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Its going on a 1998 GMC sonoma 4.3L SL truck if that helps anyone or if you know the exact belt I need.

Yeah I was just saying if he wanted to post more pics post them. Any and all info is welcome.

I remember sending you the links that was sent to me about it all bud.

I've already started on a 350tbi rebuild. Telling me I built a 3.4, drove it, and now ready to go bigger all while you putting a 4.3 in one.:p:haha::rotf:

**** having 60*V6 in a truck. And I'm taking my sweet ass time because I have 1,319,234,592,345 other projects. My main goal was to get it running and driving, once it got to that point all work stopped.

If you go to a junkyard just pick up the plug and repin it on your harness. The terminals are the same for both plugs. A few cents for a resistor and some heat shrink is all needs to be spent.

#624 ·
Not a real bad price on the alt. Its what advanced qouted me but I don't have to ship it.

The pigtail is the same one on most all GMs 94+ oreillys here has them for way under that 21 summit wants. Most any parts store should have them cheaper.

The 85ohm 1/2 watt resistor (what painless uses) can be found anywhere. I normally order my stuff like that in bulk on ebay for cheaper than rat shack wants for 5 of them.

Overall as long as you are happy do what you want but there are cheap and faster ways to even do it all with new parts.

whew...OK. i read the entire thread. I have a 73 nova with a serpentine system off a 1st Gen S-10 Blazer 4.3. so the install is the same for me. I currently have a CS130D 105amp. im installing a Lincoln Mark VIII Fan so thats the reason for the need of the AD244. im glad i found this thread. my question is the resistor...which leg of the plug do i put the 85ohm 5W resistor inline with?

I have a Mark VII fan and an AD244, it's a great combination. How are you wiring up the Mark VII? I made a custom harness & relay setup with an inline thermal switch. It works pretty damn good.

#626 ·
You still using the harness from the nova that had the 10si?

#628 ·
yes i am. i bought a 10si to ad series adapter this morning. as well as some 0 gauge copper power wire & ring terminal to run back to the battery. my ground is 2ga from the battery to block and 2 ga power to the starter solenoid. thinking about strapping another 0ga or 2ga ground from the alternator bracket back to the block, just because my alternator brackets are painted and im not sure i trust how well its grounded. i guess i could ohm it out and see where it stands. i'll have to ground body-frame as well.

OK here are some pics and a video of my install. (sorry for bad lighting, my light was low)

I want to get AD244 Alternator. I have several parts stores in my area, could I go to Autozone and get one along with the parts or do I have to order them? Currently my truck isn't charging the battery correctly. Brand new battery on the truck. I want to do it all today before going back to work tomorrow. Any help would be great. I figured I spent the extra money, but if it's going to be a hassle then I will buy the autozone version which cost 149.00.
