Can you wiggle the fan blades and get play? I had a fan clutch go south on another brand of vehicle (a diesel no less) and it made the noise, with lots of play in the fan. Look at the blades for cracks, the noise could be from blade angle change. I would also worry about the fan launching through the radiator!

Yea thats your fan. If it never goes away its probably safe to say the clutch has gone or is going. If it goes away after a bit its kinda normal (at least from my experience) I've switched over to an electric fan. while it may cost a few bucks its nice and quiet along with clearing up the engine bay a bit.

what kind of electric fan are you using? I found one out of some kind of GM car (can't remember) that is the same diameter as the stock fan. Just trying to figure out how to mount it...J

I'm actually using a Flex-a-lite Black magic #60 fan. Its made for S10's and not made for those who maybe on a budget. It has an adjustable thermostat as well as can be wired with a manual switch depending on what you do with your truck. super simple to install, and attaches to the radiator itself and allows you to put the stock shroud back on. I got mine through Summitracing.com a few years ago and i haven't had a single problem through cold winters or hot summers.

The fan you have, you'll need some kind of thermostat to turn it on and off. There was a fan people were using, I think they were on Ford... Tarus maybe. Some aftermarket fans like spal fans have plastic tabs that go through the radiator fins (all those virtical fins are just used to dissapate head, the horizontal bars you don't want to touch) anyway, the plastic tabs went through and a clip goes on the outside to hold the fan to the radiator. and you want to keep the shroud on there.
sorry to ramble on.

Yeah, I installed one of those fans with the tabs that go through the radiator once. Wound up with leaks all the time. The fan tended to not stay put, would work loose and I would constantly be pushing those tabs back on. Not to mention puncturing the radiator...Not going through that again. I think I am just going to fabricate some brackets. It appears to me that the shroud will clear it. Besides, the shroud really needs to stay anyway, since it's what holds the radiator to the support. Could you use a sender like the camaro used to use for the aux fan to turn it on? I think it would fit right into the manifold...Thanks much..J

I've never had a problem with the fans on my car, they are slim fans that connect going through the radiator. (need them due to my turbo) anyway making some brackets could be easy. You can make some tabs that hook around the top and bottom of the radiator and go up to the fan. As far as a thermostat switch, maybe you can get one to go into the radiator or in the water neck. i'm not sure. good luck, do some searches to see what people with those taurus fans used since i believe they were popular, not sure though.

Found some wiring kits in the Jegs catalog last night that come with screw in turn on thermostats. My Edel manifold has a place for one. Thinkin fer shure I am going to adapt this one that I got. I think it is 16ins and should be almost a perfect fit with the brackets..TNX...
