Valve seals

I have a 93 s10 4.3 , auto, loaded on the inside with 160k miles. It smokes when I crank it after sitting for a while. I'm pretty sure it's valve seals but I guess I won't know for sure until I tear into it. Has anybody attempted to replace the seals without removing the heads? If so I was wondering what all had to be done. Also what type valve seals did you purchase to replace the old ones. Thanks for any help.

gm has a bulletin out that recommends you replace the junk o-ring seals with the umbrella style for the small block chevy motors. you can get them from any parts place and it will be better than you have now. or you can get them from the dealer, and they will give you the updated part number. i did them on my 91 and it worked great.

i'll pm you in the am for a better explanasion.
