installing locker

i bought a remanufactured eaton locker for the rear of my blazer and was wondering if there was anything i needed to get to install it besides basic hand tools or what special procedures (if any) it involved.

the locker replaces the carrier, so you will need to reset the backlash on the ring gear, and possibly replace the bearings which is easiest with a press. so, its more than just simple hand tools. a dial indicator, torque wrench, maybe a press, and there is probably something i am forgetting.

you will also need more shims due to the diff in carriers. your fact will probably not work. when i did my torsen i had to use diff shims. the factory was too tight.

you will also need as stated above. dont forget 2 qts of your fav lube and gasket

hey I was wondering if you do the swap if you could take some pics and do a little write up if you have the time.

Hmm I know mechanics that been doing it for 30+ years and thats the first time I've ever heard of doing it by feel and without a dial. If your comfy doing it on your own rides more power to you but if I was paying you and saw you doing it I would request another mechanic.

i do pinion preload and backlash like that, been checked every time and only once was it out of spec. but i do measure it for people who dont feel comfy with me doing it that way.

Ask Brian(orangesonoma)i did the gears in his white blazer, front and rear.
plus on a front diff there is really no other way to do it

meh, i didnt use them on my truck neither. i went by feel also.

front and rear gears

i know several people that build rears by feel. the one on my 94 was done by feel. no problems yet.

I would suggest using marking compound even if you do it by feel. Even if you have the right backlash and pinion bearing preload, you wanna make sure that the pinion gear is making contact in the right spot on the ring gear.

So what would be better and more cost effective, rebuilding my factory posi rear, installing a new eaton posi or powertrax lockright locker when I regear my front and rear diffs ? I'm also wondering if I should consider installing a powertrax lockright locker in my front or would that cause longevity issues with my front diff and cv's?

I would go with an aftermarket if it were me. Daily driving a lot you may get tired of a lock-right, but really depends what you will be using the vehicle for the most and what is the "worst" it will see.

Any insight would help. Also, what do you're truck look like by the way? Any pics?
