this happens in the 04 colorado i use for work. i think the little knob is stripped inside or something, when i turn in to floor all the way it clicks a little and still blows out defrost.

 

Check your pneumatic hoses behind the dash. I had one come loose on me once and the vents would not switch. I wish they would just put motors on those things!
