Today it's 90 degrees out.
The driveway is 110.
I drove a total of 55 miles at times hitting 85mph.
Shut it off when I get home.
Start it up after I changed the air filter, so maybe 10min down time.
As it idles I see puddles of water appear. I go inside for 5 min while truck idles.
Come out to see larger puddles without any drying.
I reved it some, spits out lots of water and big puffs of white smoke or steam.
Scratched my head some, rev it some more up and down, more water and more puffs.
This happens every time I start the truck after any down time. I happens more with longer down time periods like an hour. When I start it up after an hour it knocks a lot for about a minute then goes away. As it idles, water starts to come out again.

I have heard of coolant being sucked in through cracks or leaks in head gaskets but when the engine is on the pressure keeps the coolant from leaking. When the engine is shut off, there is more pressure in the cooling system than the engine. My only problem with this theory is that I am not missing much coolant. Maybe 20-32 ounce bottle full over the last 5 years, but I wouldn't know when it started.

If this was my problem, it would account for why my truck knocks bad on startup without it being cold. Also might be the reason it shifts funning at times and runs at different rpms at different mph. Meaning it runs at 2500 rpm @ 80mph. And sometimes runs 85mph @ 2500 rpm. What the hell. It also makes are really bad jerk every once in a while. If I could just figure out what is wrong with the damn thing I would continue modifing it, but no point in moding a screwed up truck.

sounds like a blown head or intake gasket

Sounds like coolant leaking into the engine somewhere. Maybe
get it hot, put dye in it at the rad, pump up the coolant system
with a pressure tool, and use a black light to look for leaks while
at the same time watching for a pressure drop.

Might be a cracked head, bad intake gaskets, a cracked block,
etc..Only shows up when hot, but leaves coolant in the
combustion chambers after it's shut off, then when started,
the coolant sitting on top of the pistons is what's causing the
knocking until it steams out of the exhaust..I'm just guessing
on this.

I've also heard where the intake bolts can get a little loose
allowing coolant to get in when the engine is hot. You might
consider re torquing them.

whatever you do stop running it with coolant in the cylinders until you figure out what it is...water doesnt compress so if it is a minor problem like retourqueing intake manifold bolt then you are desroying your compression...and you could possibly blow a head gasket or get a case of hydrolock...

Well, it's been making noise since 10,000 miles but it has only been watering like this for the last year now. I need to do a compression check on that back cylinder and check the spark plugs, just haven't gotten around to it. Idealy, it has a leak and the extended warrenty takes care of it and the cat. Wound still be a pain in the arss.:(

Question: I have a compression tester that I use for the ATV's and it has different size plug threads. How do I do a test?

Also, if anyone has better news or has had this problem chime in please. The more the better. Thank you

ps, it has 53k now lol

When you remove the plugs examine the insulator & shell on the business end if one of the plugs appears clean like it was just removed from the box that is the cylinder with the coolant leak. Does the dipstick show any signs of a muddy brown color? this is also a sign of a coolant leak into the engine.

Well, since I've noticed the splashing I've done a few oil changes and haven't found anything abnormal in the oil. The coolant looks good but has some slight swerling oily look to it, but so small cause coolant is oily anyway isn't it? I'll take a look at the spark plugs when i do the compression test.

On that note, how do I do a compression test lol.:haha:

but not that much condensation... thats a little much. no your coolant should not be or look oily at all. if your oil does not come out looking like coffee when you change your oil then chances are its not a head gasket, especially if its been running that long like this. i suspect its going to be coolant leaking into your intake. what motor in your truck?

It is a 2001 4.3. Is it possible to leak coolant down one intake runner? I thought it might be condenstion when it was cooler around here but now that I'm looking at 85+ it doesn't seem likely. And at the same time, how long does it take to burn off condensation? I've done 60+ miles, turned it off, came back out 1/2 hour to an hour later and had it piss like this. Can condensation form when it sits for that period of time, at 85-95 degrees?

no you have a blown head gasket most likely....or intake manifold gasket, if you're driving this thing everyday, get it to a mechanic to check it out....don't keep driving, you'll just hurt the engine

well, he says small amounts of coolant are missing, not much though.....I dunno, if I was stumped like this I'd take it to the base hobby shop and have one of the guys help me diagnose it....

Smell the exhaust for a sweet smell. If it's just water, it won't have that sweet smell - also, maybe feel the liquid coming out. Anti-freeze will be slippery, not like water. If it is water only, don't worry about it - a by product of good combustion is water. If it is anti-freeze, you will be using some from your cooling system. Good luck with it

Well, I haven't been able to look at the plugs yet. I'm still driving it around, has 3 months until extended warrenty runs out lol. It looks like water and feels like water but it smells gross, sweet like. I've smelled cars with cracked heads and blow gaskets, white smoke everywhere, very sweet smelling. This didn't smell as strong of course but smelled odd nuntheless.

What the hell is up with the knock when I start it up after it sits for an hour. Went out to smell the exhaust and it knocked like a woodpecker, figured that could also be from the water. The dealerships around here don't help. I guess I need to get on those plugs.

bro, ur under warranty, take it to the shop. end of diagnosis
You would think right:rolleyes: but it doesn't seem to work like that. I took it in for a bad A/C compressior clutch, it rattles like crazy and seems to be internal, but because it still works they will not warrenty it. The knock they just push off as normal because of the design of the pistons, and they know it's only the rear driver's side, yet they wont do anything. Every time I take it in and they don't do anything, it costs me in diagnosis or car rentals. I want to be damn sure, or the engine pissing and on fire, before I ever take it in again. So either they are filling my coolant bottle every time, or I am not losing coolant.

Just doesn't make any sense though, I guess water can come out at any time. I've been able to get it to piss like this 4 times in one day.

Someone else try it. Drive it like 20 miles on the freeway. Turn it off and let stand for an hour. Turn it back on and listen for a knock sound right on startup. Also, watch for any water. Mine will piss for at least 5-10 minutes after I start it. If I took these steps and spread them apart to fit the time, I could get it to do this a few times. If I rev the motor (tried to catch on film, couldn't) I get puffs of dirty white steam I guess coming out the back. I can do that for a couple minutes.

I am on the computer doing work and school work, also a full time job, now I just need to find the time to check those plugs.

dude, sweet smelling exhaust, knocking....slight crack in head gasket or something near that one piston maybe??

It sounds like your causing some kind of engine damage....I'd definitely take it to another dealer to get it checked out....cause that just isn't right

Your deffently hurting your engine the more you run it. Go to another dealership and have them fix it. Dont take no for an answer ask to talk to the service manager.
