figure this would be the best place to post this. when I'm using my router and jig to cut out rings for my subs, i will occasionally break a router bit. I'm using a 1/4" straight bit. i have my router on the slowest setting and go really slow. should i speed things up? anyone have any tips?

yeah i was barely putting any pressure on it, just enough to keep it moving along. i already got my rings cut out so ill have to wait till next thing i need to cut to get some more practice.

should i go to the max speed or just faster than the slowest setting? it has settings A-E i think. A being slowest, thats what i had it set on.

i usually cut mdf in two passes just to ease the load on my router and so bits don't burn up or break

cheap bits or are you paying $20-25 for a good bit?

i know what you're doing wrong. you're using a STRAIGHT BIT. get a 1/4" spiral upcut. works much better on MDF and the jasper circle jigs even recommend using spiral upcut over straight bits for that reason

that's the bit to use. still make the cut slow (router on highest speed though) and it shouldn't dull too quickly. i usually only have to make one pass to cut a 12" circle in under 90 seconds.

well.....i used a straight cut bit before i knew about the spiral upcut bit..when i went to buy an extra bit, they had no up cut bits....so i got another straight bit.....still have never broken one myself.....but i did show a kid how to do it and let him use my shit......he broke a bit that was well used(but not done)......and the asshole never even offered to pay for the bit....but he did use my back-up bit

my fault....when he broke it i should have made him go buy one and i could keep my stash...........

yeah, thats pretty shitty he didnt even offer to pay for it. he would never be using any of our tools again!

one of my friends was using our welder, and i told him it was almost out of wire and he used the last of it, and bought me the big ass spool of it when i told him he could just buy me a little spool. sweet lol.
