2001 Jimmy --> 2001 5.3 vortec?

Im sure this was posted already, but ive seen so many different applications so i figured i would just ask.

Heres the story: My 4.3 with 80k miles needs a crankshaft... and i want to make this truck fast. I was thinking supercharger but why spend the extra money after rebuilding to make the 4.3 fast when i can just use it for funding a v8?

So, my mechanic tells me if i get a 5.3 vortec from a 2001 chevy: computer, harness and longblock, it should all bolt right in no problems. of course were doing an e-fan, motor mounts, little things. As far as insepction it should pass as a chevy 1500... it just plugs in...

Is this correct? if not what else will i need to do to make this work... its a 2001 4x4 gmc jimmy, and its in NY so will be inspected in new york.

Thanks for the help everyone

:blaugh:

Its a lot more involved than that... or else everyone would do it.

ive been told the same thing....but if it was so easy everyone would do it....but i would like to know what all is involved in the swap....is it true that the harness are the same? and the computer is the same? and you just have to have it reflashed

i would think you would have to do somethin about fuel delivery, and motor mounts

No the harnesses are not the same. You would have to have one made through current performance or something like that. It is far from a "drop in" It wont take long and you will have several thousand in a swap. Just dont think it is something you are going to do over the weekend and only spend $1,000 dollars.

Yea, understandable. Thats what i thought, if it was easier more people would have done it. Im looking to spend 3000 on this project, i have to do it because my 4.3 is gonna die any day now.

So what really is needed to do this? Either way im going to do it. Im not spending more money on a little 4.3...

I just got hired in at advanced auto and I was playing around on their salvage program on the computer and I can pull up and order 5.3l's with anywhere from 25-60k miles on them for around 700-975$ So if you are serious about this you should checkout your local advanced store, the engine's also come with warranties and all that shit.

Well i got a good deal going with my guy, i did his website so i got free labor on my truck :p :p :p

so where is it that i can order one of dem engines from?

still not sure what i need for all of this... do i get the wire harness and the computer from the SAME car the motor came from? Do i need a custom wire harness? do i flash the computer for anything? Do i need motor mounts? Has anyone done this in a 2001 on here?

I saw a 2002 with a 6.0 votech in it.... phat ride

there is a sticky at the top of the v8 section that blackX started. The first page has the parts list you will need. just read that thread and most questions should be answered.

I am going with vortec 350 from fullsize because I can redo the wirring, it is not as bad as the lsx swaps are (form what I read anyway)

Believe me, im the type of person that can read for days and days about this stuff, ive read the stickys. Reason im asking this is because i have seen too many different cases with different answers. Some people say harness works, some doesnt, some say it passes insepction, some dont. Reason for posting is so i could clear everything up. Before i go and buy a motor, i want to make sure i have the right one. Some one please just clear it all up for me. I pretty much know what i need BESIDES the motor, harness, and computer. Other than that i have parts lists printed out all over, im sure ill have every part i need to put any motor in the car, exept i dont know what one / what computer i should be using. My major major major concern is passing inspection in NY. Has anyone here done it?

The problem is there is no one right way to do it it all depends on the support parts you use not just the engine you decide to use with any swap you just need to decide whether or not your going to do it and when a problem arises DEAL WITH IT! most people here have found the information they needed on there own and are nice enough to share it with others but it gets tiring when people just ask question after question. Not everyone will know everything about every situation as for your ny emissions check your regional forum for help there the locals will probably beable to help you better than some one in MN or FL if you know what I mean Sorry if I sound like a jerk But it gets kinda tiring when people that havent even picked up a wrench to do a swap ask a million questions just to be "prepared" the only way to be truly prepared is with an open mind and an open wallet.

Yea it makes sence, but theres my reason for coming onto a forum, for common knowledge from people who have already done it. Why venture onto your own when you have a community of people with common interest who have already done it? I understand what you mean. Im going to give it a shot.. The open wallet is the only problem ... im full time student, this is my DD, and i blew my 4.3, i need to know ahead of time if i can pull this off, rather than being stuck with no car for the summer because i have 1/2 a V8 in it.

hey heres a couple sites for you: S10 V8 Conversion Community www.V8S10.org

both have all the info you need.

from what I have read, with a vortec 350 of similar year to yours, or into any other 98+ s-series vehicle, you can use your harness and ECU from YOUR truck. If you get the harness/ECU with the v8, i dont know if you will need/have to use it or not.

wiring for the motor includes adding wires for 2 more injectors, lengthning the knock sensor wire I think. from what Ive heard if your good with wiring, it shouldnt be too hard.

you will also have to wire in e-fans, the motor driven one will not fit.

get into those forums, they can help you out much more than this one can with your swap

hey sorry, not trying to bash this site, its been awesome so far, I havent gotten a chance to read the sticky yet, I was just trying to help. There is 2nd gen info on those sites, you just have to look harder. Theres a guy on v8s10.org thats doing a 2nd gen swap, ive been watching. heres a linky to that.

V8S10.org :: View topic - Second Gen 5.7 Vortec Project

I do plan on reading the stickys too
