1990 Chevy S10 Project Truck...loves to be difficult.

OK, first off, let me introduce my project truck. She is a 1990 4x4 Chevy S10, 4.3L.

I got this truck as a result of my other truck being stolen, which left me with nothing so I had to take what little money I had to get a vehicle quick.
Now to the Issues and/or Questions. I'm open to suggestions, in fact, I welcome them!

  • Brake Lights won't work: The bulbs are fine, and there don't seem to be any blown fuses. As you probably realize, the brake lights and blinker lights are the same bulb. The blinkers work just fine. Any ideas?
  • Shifts too late? I'm not used to an older vehicle, so this may be me being paranoid. But my truck seems to ride in first gear for a long period of time, either up to about 15mph or 2,000rpm. It seems reluctant to shift into second, sometimes you have to let off the accelerator for it to shift into second. Every other gear shifts smoothly, but when it goes from first to second it kind of jumps.
  • Leaky Windshield Seals: I'm about to take my front windshield out to do a little damage control (rust :/), and the seals need to be replaced. I found the exterior window trim, part # 29 7670 from LMCTrucks.com, but When you lift that seal up, there is another one under it, like below the windshield. Does anyone know what this is called/where I can order it from?
  • Gas gauge always reads full: As great as that sounds, It is really inconvenient. I have a digital dash. Anyone have any suggestions? The level of gas never changes, it always stays at FULL, yet the other things change, like the Battery Voltage which is right next to the fuel gauge.
  • Parts of the Dash come and go as they please: When i bought the truck, the dash was completely black, it would not light up at all. Randomly it will come back on, then parts of it will dissappear while the rest will stay lit up. Currently it does not show your speed, though it still shows mileage, oil, FULL GAS, and Battery voltage (conveniently for the seller it did not show mileage when i bought it, 233,000). Ideas?! I LOVE if someone knew anything about changing from a digital to an analog dash, if that's even possible?
  • 4X4 won't engage: My 4X4 shifter will go down from 2wd to 4High easily, but when driving it does not seem to be in 4x4. The shifter will not go into N easily at all, you really have to force it. And if you get it into N, it WILL NOT go in 4Low. No matter how hard you try, it will NOT move down, and it's very hard to shift from N back up to 4High. There is a TINY transmission leak, though maybe only a drop or two every few days. This REALLY makes me mad, since if I'm going to get the bad mpg of a 4X4 i want to be able to get all four tires spinning. I don't want all that extra weight if it's not even going to work.
  • Smoke when accelerating: I know this can be many things, but I figured I'd list it here as well. I've got new piston rings for it, and I'm about to have the engine taken apart to replace a LOT of leaky gaskets(yay for an entire engine rebuild gasket kit from Felpro!), the timing chain, water pump, etc.
  • Headlights need adjusting: One points sideways, and one points up. But i guess i can't complain as they are glass and not the shitty plastic ones that you see so often clouded up :D. Any tips/articles that could benefit me to make my headlights actually go straight. (I'd even settle for both point up, to blind those HID assholes).
  • My ABS light is on: on my temperamental dash. My breaks work amazingly, no noise or anything, though I haven't actually gotten a chance to get the wheels off to check them yet. One thing at a time.

Don't even get me started on the heater core bypass i had to do the day i got it, or the front suspension being so mess up it's not even safe to drive right now lol. Or the rust spots. I'm sure there are other issues that I have forgotten, but these are the only ones i can think of right now.

Come on fellas, help a girl out. Any input would be great! (And yes I did paint that red, it looks so out of place in that nasty engine bay doesn't it!) That is going to be my project when the engine is being rebuilt, repaint the engine bay and firewall! Rust CONTROL! ;) :)

Lights and shifting maybe wires chewed by mice. There is a plug at the back of the bed for taillights on the frame, unplug it and see if you have power there.

Windshield is glued in

4x4 could be the actuator under the battery, it's vacuum operated

for brakes check your brake light switch there should be a wire running into the switch and 2 wires running out. test the switch by depressing the pedal and checking for power on the 2 wires that lead off of it.

the gas gauge reading full can be a bad ground since the truck has rust on it can just be corroded.

the dash it could be loose connectors behind it

the headlights there are 2 screws on them to adjust. 1 is on the top the other is the side tighten or loosen till you get them where you need them.

I've replaced the brake pedal switch, but I haven't tested the wires so i'll give that a try, thankyou :)

Well, naturally....
But there is a seal of some kind underneath the windshield, it's inaccessible from the inside since it's tucked into that little lip between the windshield and ceiling. I Want to know what that is called or where i can find it since I'm replacing all the seals. I really hate sponging out water alllll the time. And i noticed when it doesn't rain for a while and no water gets in on my dash board my dash starts working again.

i will agree with digger the 4x4 issue sounds like a vacuum issue, Friend had a nearly identical truck and his had the exact same issue, he sold it for 400 and found out about a week later the 4x4 issue was vacuum related.. common issue. Same with the gas gauge, common issue for it to stop working, I recommend running your truck low on gas dropping the tank and changing the sending unit, another friend with a digital dash had a similar issue, replaced the sending unit and bam, gas gauge works perfectly, as for the flickering dash, pull it apart and pull your cluster and see if the water is leaking down behind it and causing a short.

I think its a glue that goes underneath it im pretty sure any car window place will have it. And nighhawk can be right about the gas gauge being the sender but like i said check the ground to it first the 89 i had had the problem i replaced the whole assembly and it turned out to the ground.

You guys are giving me hope, i'd rather it be a vaccum issue than something worse. Especially with the transfer case leaking a little bit.

First off nice looking truck. Second check out Lmctruck.com they have a complete line of parts right down to the nuts and bolts.
Thanks. It'll look better once i've got all the mods I want and it's running good! :) And yeah I know about them, i was just about to order the windshield trim from them.

I took the beast for a drive today, and when I pulled her back in the driveway I noticed that the two lines going from the oil filter (my oil filter is on the drivers side right behind the headlight? weird??) into the side of the radiator have started spraying oil out, which hit the fan and flung EVERYWHERE. Awesome.

As far as checking wires/grounds, whoever owned my truck before did an awesome job of ghetto rigging it. There are wires disconnected everywhere, things in the wrong places (my windshield wipers get turned on by button they installed?) so i'm fairly certain they caused whatever is wrong.

The windshield is glued in, there is no other seal. The plastic molding around the edges is just trim. If it leaks, the adhesive has dried out, or it wasn't installed properly to begin with. The rear window does have a seal.

The '91 (I have a '93) only had ABS on the rear wheels, and it's pretty worthless. I disabled it on mine because I want full control of my brakes. If the brakes work fine I wouldn't worry about that. There should be a flat rectangular box near the master cylinder. That is what controls the "ABS" Make sure the wires are all connected. These trucks do not have a true ABS system. There are no sensors at the brakes, all it does is control pressure to the rear brakes at the master cylinder.

^^^ i just uninstalled my ABS controller after i drove 15 miles not knowing my previously worthless e-brake was on because the light was lit up all the time because some how, water got inside and shorted it out.

also a silly thing about the brake lights is even if the wires check out to be good and bulbs are good they can be in the wrong bulb slot and would make them not work. the po had them all switched in my ride and when i found this out switched them and they all work great now. just my .02 to help out. you may have already fixed that issue by now.
