So my buddy just got a '76 Chevy K10 Scottsdale, and we're trying to figure out what motor it's got.

I found three numbers in the location inside the perimeter of the bellhousing mating flange. The numbers are "010," "020," and "154." I know that the 010 and 020 signify the high-strength block with an addtional 1% tin and 2% nickel. I'm trying to figure out what the 154 is for. I know where the block casting number is on a SBC, but I couldn't find it on the engine. It's also got a Quadrajet 4bbl and I think it had HEI igniton, if that helps at all.

The motor isn't the original engine, but if anyone could help me out it would be good.

There wasnt a full casting number on the block?

The balancer will tell you if its a 400 or not for sure, otherwise its a plain jane 350, most likely 180hp turd.

Can anyone tell me why people get hung up on the 010 block, its the most common there is, If i had a nickel for everytime someone talked about there "high nickel" block, which means almost nothing.

The '010 "high-nickel" block castings are just that....iron blocks with a higher nickel content than usual. This makes the iron harder and stronger, and therefore more durable. You can put more miles on it and get less cylinder wear. It's harder to strip the boltholes. You can run more power through it without cracking it (not that this is an issue for most people.)

For most people, there is no difference. For someone running a ton of power, or trying to get 500,000 miles out of an engine, it's a much better starting point.

The engine going in my Jimmy will be built on a 4-bolt 010 block.

Gottcha, I know about them :p , I just wonder why people need to state it, like its a mod, or something rare.... I mean quality rod bolts are much more important "high nickel" block, and people dont list rod bolts....

I've seen people list rod bolts as a modification, usually ARP bolts of course.
