any thoughts?

What year, motor?

Might check in the TB, see if the blade got stuck open or something?
96 vortec 4.3... that was my first thought... but it was opening and closing fine...

anyways... I had the thing towed to a mechanic; I hand the keys to one of the workers so he could get my truck in the garage... as I'm telling the mechanic what the problem was, I hear a loud BANG followed by a loud POP, I turned around and see smoke POURING out of the hood... I'm thinking shit... this is a bad day... trouble starting, mega backfire in the manifolds, tow fee, rental car to get me through the day...

but it wasn't over, bout 3 hours ago, the mechanic calls me with an update and tells me that I'm WAY over due on a tune-up; I'm like "that's impossible, it just got one bout a month ago and I haven't driven it since." So I fish through my receipts, and realize my last three tune-ups were at his shop... needless to say, I've been either ripped, or was about to be! So I go over have a look; my airfilter looked like shit, spark plugs eroded... I didn't say anything, I just told him to hold off on repairs...

So I had it towed to another shop ran by a personal friend of mine about 20 miles out... another lovely fee. An update will follow.

All n All. it was a shitty day in the life of my 4.3, maybe even the last depending on how crippled she is...

Sounds to me like he just bought you a new truck. Especially if you can show all receipts that he did all of the work. Or, at the very least, he's paying for all of the towing you just had done, and any repairs that are now needed on the truck. Unfortunately, you're going to need to call a lawyer and get some legal advice. Don't worry too much about the legal fees, they should be part of the lawsuit. But, this really sounds like a case for a lawyer.

Definitely not going to bother with a lawsuit...

The truck is 10 years old and in that 10 years, the only problem I had was the Alt went out. That thing has done everything from hauling boats, deer hunting to tearing down trees + I have a lead foot...whether the damage was his fault or not, I still consider myself pretty fortunate.... It's not worth my time.... at best? what? another used engine with its own problems...

Well, I'm now off to the shop then to work.. I'll post up later

No, you're entitled to have the truck fixed properly. I'm actually glad to hear that you're not wanting to gouge the guy, but this is one case where you are actually entitled to something. He charged you for services rendered that weren't. Fine, you don't want to try to get a new truck out of it, then at the very least, he owes you all of your money back for every service he's supposedly done on your truck and owes you for the cost of the repairs that now have to be made.

I'm not one to lightly recommend someone sue another person, as I tend to think like you do, but in this case, its very much worthwhile. It doesn't matter what the truck is worth, it comes down to his stealing your money and now your time, you don't HAVE to get an attorney, but you definately need to document everything and file a complaint against him. Or, at the absolute very least, you need to file a complaint with the BBB in your area against the idiot.

It's funny you mention... I called the owner and told him the bit; apparently he had a very lazy mechanic that recently got busted and he OFFERED to put in a rebuilt motor with a 10k warrantee free of charge :) ...a simple refund would have pleased me...

I thought it sounded like a pretty fair shake to me, my mechanic friend agreed... so I took the offer.
