i.ve got a 97 ex-cab w/ 4.3 motor
runs good especially for first 30 min.after that it develops a very hard shift from 1st to 2nd, and pulls code p1870.
which translates into -trans. component slipping.
then if i reset the code no problem and shifting is ok for about another 30 - 45 min.
any ideas?
thanx

Ive got the same problem. I out some Bar's trans. cleaner stuff in it. It seemed to ease the slipping so far. Some bottle with red in one compartment and clear in another. For $8 I gave it a try. Been fine since.

That stuff works pretty good. You can try adding LubeGard tranny additive also. I've used LubeGard on slippy trannys and is works awesome. Here's a link:

anything thats slips in the trans will trigger that code. the valve body has a flaw that allows the TCC solonoid to wibble. I had the code come up on me when i lost overdrive lockup and 1 to 2 shift was hard. To correct this it only costs about $30. If you have these symptoms all you have to do is change your TCC solonoid because they crack over time and do not hold pressure. You can change this valve just by dropping the pan. I do not recommend that you bring you truck to a trans shop cause its an easy way for them to talk you into getting a rebuild. You can do it yourself its easy. If you are looking at the valve body facing the front of the truck the tcc solonoid is located on the front left side of the valvebody.

i had that code thrown a while ago. checked my fluid and it was very dirty and almost gone. it went away after the tranny flush. that might fix it.

I have a 98 'noma 2.2 with auto trans. My overdrive lockup went away today on the highway, then about 10 minutes later it downshifted into third for no reason. I pulled over, turned it off and let it sit for a minute. Then I started it back up and it would shift all the way to drive, but still no lockup. Then the SES light came on. Had it checked, P1870. Then on the way home, it locked up just fine. Mine has always hit second pretty hard since I bought it with 35k on it (84k now). Is this the same kinda thing that osoosweetX is talking about, or does anyone have any other suggestions. Tranny fluid is full and still good.

the valvebody defect i think is bullshit. Yea the TCC (torque converter clutch) solonoid will egg out the bore it sits in if this problem isnt fixed now. The TCC holds the pressure for the torque converter to lock up. I know from experiences that thes ****ers crack. When they crack the no longer hold that pressure. NO PRESSURE NO LOCKUP. You should get this problem fixed before you totally **** up the torque converter and maybe the cluches in the trans. TCC solonoid est.$35.....Trans Rebuild $1500-$1800...Dont learn the hard way
