machine work on Vortech heads need some pointers

Alright here is the deal in what i am sure will be another long boring post by me :rolleyes: , as i mentioned before i picked up a set of 2000 vortech heads that had 15k miles on them for 50 bucks :) from a freind of a guy who owns a yard. they almost look like new reguardless.....

1). Taking them in either tommarow or monday to be magnafluxed checked to see if there warped cracked etc etc. The shop is charging 15 dollars a head to do this part. Anything i should have them check to make sure these heads are good before i start throwing money at them?

2). Next its missing the rockers... had roller rockers on it and guy who sold them to me wanted them... of coarse. So i am after a set of roller rockers from Crane or OEM need some pointers there...., do i need conversion studs ?or is there something else i am missing. He told me he can get me everything i need to run new OEM roller rockers brand new installed for $185.00, But if remember right Crane had a set at summit for like 150-160 everyone kept telling me about. What ratio do you guys run 1.6 or the umm 1.52 waren't it?

3). I am going to have him do the 3 angle valve job and clean them up, he said it would be around $100 for this for both heads. Now the question is should i have him bowl hog it and put in some like Manley stainless 1.6 exhaust and 2.02 intake valves ? If i should what sizes so far i am planning on those and using Manley stainless need some pointers here. Not sure whats the best for boost i am going to be running between 5-8lbs nothing crazy.

4). Next is the Cam lift clearance question.... Its never been clear to me at what amount of lift on a cam does the heads have to have the retainers cut? and is that what needs to be cut? I am planning on ordering a good cam i am trying to mentally set aside 200-300 for just the cam so this would be a good time for someone to step up and school me in what would be a good setup, I have wrote down what Rat recommended a couple weeks back and thats been the best lead i've had. I unfortunatley it looks like the heads will be done before the cam because of the way this shop is working me in during some spare time.

5). Anything i missed? how about valve springs and retainers? valve guides ? Anything i should be paying special attention to? I am wanting to get some pretty respectable HP outta this truck (maybe 250-300 RWHP?) and still have it deemed reliable for things like long trips etc. And i'm not sure at what point the cam get to be a problem but someone is hooking me up we'll say with a LM1 for this truck, and i am probably going to have a chip burned or if i can find enough info and hardware to burn my own i'll do that.

Also i have a 2114 intake sitting here waiting its turn to go on. And if i play my cards right when it comes to bolting the headers backup time my dad or brother will chip in again for a set of ceramic headers. (kinda a family project it was my grandpas truck.)

Which conversion, the motor work?

The computer work i will probably do the wiring myself and come up with another harness to run that stuff or hack up a syty harness to fit ontop of keeping the old computer to run tranny.

The tuning will more that likley still be Brian at TBI chips, that guy knows his shit.

Rat you thinking about converting to another ECM ? I can get those syty ecms cheap as shit, and with harnesses and ecm for like 250-350. Those at least have 2-3bar maps and actually have the tables big enough to work with. But i'm really looking into Accel DFI Gen 6 or MAYBE 7, But i've read about people with gen 6 running 3 bars and even wideband input...Their is a supposid last update for the 6 that lets it run wideband.. i've see those ecms go for 100-300 all day on ebay..

Sorry, i was reffering to the intake manifold machine work.

I am not thinking about converting the stock computer for now, i will see how good i can get it. That is a little bit furthur than i am thinking right now for my truck.

Oh the machine work, i dunno yet.. Maybe boosted just because i know he does good work but i've not seen his 2114 work upclose or anything though. I will have to think about it, I might get dumb and do it myself, I've got 2 freinds that are brothers with a full aluminum setup on a giant miller welder, and my dad does mech alignment for a living.. but i dunno if i feel like going through all of it yet.

Also videos from drag racing are out.. i'll post them on another thread

Ya he's got a amazing setup, i wish i could cut down on all that AC stuff also but i'm just having trouble convincing myself i won't want it on these freaking 400-500 mile trips in the midst of the summer.

So anyone have a backgroud in those Accel DFI gen 6 units ? I'm thinking i'm going to be going accel dfi 6 or 7 or holley setup if i could find something cheap... i'm going to start looking for them and information hardcore..

Its alive!!!!!

Heck man you've missed the other threads, there is a new turbo motor build thread, a intercooler thread, Intake and plenum, and even a downpipe thread.

Its a couple days off from running.. currently i have

2114 intake MPFI converted with 6 65# injectors
Custom plenum with ls6 throttle body
Megasquirt EFI

1993 typhoon motor, Mccoy/Hitech motors 650HP build
All forged internals, custom Mccoy Cam, Cyro'ed crank
01 Heads with Mild Port and a TON of bowl work done
Plus all the same toys i had, full rollers, yada yada manley race valves

PT60 turbo on syty turbo manifolds

TiAL wastegate
TiAL blow off valve

TONS of other crap but thats the rough breakdown

ITs enough HP that with slicks and someone besides me setting up the rear suspension it could get into the 10's but i'm going to run it easier and stick 11.99 and above (don't want a roll cage lol)

NHRA changed the rules last year. You are now allowed to run as fast as 11.5 without a cage, just to inform you. Good luck with the rest of the build, keep up the good work.

Really, 11.5 I'll have to check it again. The shop doing my motor showed me a write up where he got in trouble for running 12's in a rag top and his little like ticket said 11.99 solid top cars, But i dunno maybe it was old.. 11.5 is haulin... big time.

Sy-Clone thats a nice peice but my intakes been done for weeks i had the pics of it posted with my plenum, I went last night and spent like 200 more dollars in AN fittings lines for fuel then a big ass derale oil cooler.

Also all my silicon elbows and fittings came today..I got them crazy cheap, quality peices to..
