machine work on Vortech heads need some pointers

Alright here is the deal in what i am sure will be another long boring post by me  , as i mentioned before i picked up a set of 2000 vortech heads that had 15k miles on them for 50 bucks :) from a freind of a guy who owns a yard. they almost look like new reguardless.....

1). Taking them in either tommarow or monday to be magnafluxed checked to see if there warped cracked etc etc. The shop is charging 15 dollars a head to do this part. Anything i should have them check to make sure these heads are good before i start throwing money at them?

2). Next its missing the rockers... had roller rockers on it and guy who sold them to me wanted them... of coarse. So i am after a set of roller rockers from Crane or OEM need some pointers there...., do i need conversion studs ?or is there something else i am missing. He told me he can get me everything i need to run new OEM roller rockers brand new installed for $185.00, But if remember right Crane had a set at summit for like 150-160 everyone kept telling me about. What ratio do you guys run 1.6 or the umm 1.52 waren't it?

3). I am going to have him do the 3 angle valve job and clean them up, he said it would be around $100 for this for both heads. Now the question is should i have him bowl hog it and put in some like Manley stainless 1.6 exhaust and 2.02 intake valves ? If i should what sizes so far i am planning on those and using Manley stainless need some pointers here. Not sure whats the best for boost i am going to be running between 5-8lbs nothing crazy.

4). Next is the Cam lift clearance question.... Its never been clear to me at what amount of lift on a cam does the heads have to have the retainers cut? and is that what needs to be cut? I am planning on ordering a good cam i am trying to mentally set aside 200-300 for just the cam so this would be a good time for someone to step up and school me in what would be a good setup, I have wrote down what Rat recommended a couple weeks back and thats been the best lead i've had. I unfortunatley it looks like the heads will be done before the cam because of the way this shop is working me in during some spare time.

5). Anything i missed? how about valve springs and retainers? valve guides ? Anything i should be paying special attention to? I am wanting to get some pretty respectable HP outta this truck (maybe 250-300 RWHP?) and still have it deemed reliable for things like long trips etc. And i'm not sure at what point the cam get to be a problem but someone is hooking me up we'll say with a LM1 for this truck, and i am probably going to have a chip burned or if i can find enough info and hardware to burn my own i'll do that.

Also i have a 2114 intake sitting here waiting its turn to go on. And if i play my cards right when it comes to bolting the headers backup time my dad or brother will chip in again for a set of ceramic headers. (kinda a family project it was my grandpas truck.)

Thanks a million everyone.:D

Jesse i went with the 190, seeing how i only need 13-20psi i felt that the 255 was going to end up pumping alot of fuel past the injectors and just heating up the fuel... That and i think the 190 is good to like 500-600hp lol so it SHOULD cover me..

How did you install yours,.. Thats my next concern, to take the bed off or to drop the tank.... niether has been done before on this truck.,

i dropped my tank once, and its a pain. if you have some friends, just take the bed off and leave the tank in place. then you just pound the lock ring counterclock wise, disconnect some of the lines, and the entire unit lifts right out. the entire process takes about 15 min, real easy.

I have the 190 as well and I think its good up to around 30#, I too dropped
the tank. Boy, was that ever fun. Pulling the bed seems like the better way.
The kit from APE is sweet. Like s10ls says, it goes right in.

Oh and you will want to use a brass punch to remove the ring.
You don't want to take a chance on a spark in that area...

good deal brock. with those parts your fueling setup is pretty solid now. what pump did you go with? i just installed my walbro255 for a syclone, and it was about the easiest thing i ever did to my truck. with the supplied adapter harness it just plugged right in.
what psi is the 255 good for? i'm needing 50# can it do that easy?

Alright,
Drove the truck today, with the new chip and without the new reg and pump coulnd't resist. So i threw the new chip in and took it out...

Only thing i can say is... TBICHIPS rules...

From the like 8 line email i sent him saying, oh at idle it did this and from the low thottle it was this and when i stopped it did this and when i bla bla bla...

And he fixed like ..everything... ITs actually drivable now.

I took it out after about a minute of low speed testing on the tune i decided it was time to go out on a main road for a minute... after i pull out barley above idle i got into it really slow watching the wideband... tire broke loose and just killed it barley above idle.... look back there is like 5-6ft of fat black patch from like the second before i caught it and let go of that gas.. i can already see its going to be a joke on the traction end even with my mighty 245 kumohs,..

So i did get on it a little, pull like a feight train till about 3500-4000 rpm and just starts to fall out, definetly running out of fuel. I am going to have to put this fuel pump and areomotive before i can say anyhting about the tune or injectors. I got into it really really slow and let it climb rpms slow and it did manage to get higher in rpms before it went lean which kinda made me think it is definetly fuel pump.. it got up to 4000 RPM rougly and then started going 14.5 the 15.4. 15.9. then like suddently goes to like 16.9 17. 3 etc etc and i let go and it shoots back down to 14.5.

just going down the road it stays at low 14.s so thats alot better.. I'm telling ya for the second try and him not seeing ANY data besides a couple things i told him he has made massive improvments.

supercharger is installed, i think i've only made it into boost once.. today for a couple seconds... i don't think i have anywhere near the kinda fuel i need to going to it yet, i need to get the fuel pump and fmu fpr tommorow hopefully and see how it goes.

I second that, sounds like a beast though I like it.

Alright, Got a little farther,..

Put in the fuel pressure regulator fmu deal,... I used the emissions spot on the TBI seeing how i recently opened it up. I don't know that this see's full vacum and boost yada yada.. but ... damn

Got it in, first turned the key to the on spot so the fuel pump would run,... it read about 15psi... so we thought game on. started it up, then it read like 5psi, truck was running ROUGH, wideband was at like 10.4ish, turned it up till it hit 15psi, truck idles out perfect goes to like 13.6area then once its warm hits like 14.5.

That alone on the old fuel pump is a massive improvment... REALLY REALLY responsive, I took it out for a drive... its alsmost perfect now, except around 3500-4500rpm area it starts to go lean slowly but its kinda random one run you think its going to go full blown 5k rpm shift full boost the next its like the thing can't keep up at lower rpms.., i think the fuel pump is definetly maxed out. I can actually hear the factory pump howling and the reg like clicking now.... lol so i'm pushing her. When i rev it up to like 2500 rpm the fuel pressure would hit like 20lbs. Still no boost gauge so i couldn't tell ya what its doing yet... still gotta get that thing in..

At this point i can now get on it pretty good.. When i jump on it the AF drops from like 13.5-14.6 normal above idle driving, to like 11.3-12.4 and it just rips.. I have never driven anything so responsive and pulls so hard as this thing and i'm only letting it go to like 4000rpm if that. When you get on it more then say quarter throttle from 2-5mph it breaks the tires loose. Pretty amazing, this FMU FPR makes the tune really close, I still need to datalog the new chip and send back results but its pretty close.. Its actually drivable and able to romp on it a little.

Oh ya and throttle shaft is leaking lie a bitch... Onto that project. After maybe 10 minutes of driving there was wet spots on the intake from gas dripping down... grrr haven't even ran it out to 5K+ rpm and went under full boost yet. I will solve this one..

I definetly need to get the fuel pump in and fmu fpr deal setup on it before i tell him anything to change, fuel system was really lagging..

I have done so much research on these freaking TBI units its nuts, I think i can fix the leaking throttle shafts myself... I need to goto a junkyard tommarow and see if i can get a TBI unit cheap with no injectors or anything..

I THINK a little machine work... some .. ahh i wanna see more before i start throwing out ideas...

However know that i found companies that will not only custom make TBI units for anyhting from scratch for any application but they also had option for converting to a 4 barrel 1000cfm 4 injector setup. So ... anyways its like 330am more tommorow.....

yah i know, i can't believe your up! wait a min, why am I up?!

You can get the stock TBI re bushed at the throttle shaft. It's really important
that that area be tight as its right at the plates and manifold vacuum.

Deal is GM put so much stuff on the left side of the TBI at the throttle shaft
such as the linkage for the gas pedal and the linkage for the tranny. That
is if you have a TV cable. If you look at the right side the only thing there
is like the TPS. This being the case, the throttle shaft will oval out at the
left side causing a leak both gas and vacuum, plus in some cases will
bind up the throttle plates so you get a weird high idle and sticking
throttle..

Wait until you get that done and the new Walbro installed. With the new
FPR and 190 pump as well as a sealed TBI at the shaft, that ride should
flat fly.

Is this the place you found for custom TBI's ?

Alright i hate to post this before i check them out... But

http://www.customefis.com/pod.html

There it is like 2 and 4 barrel 1000 cfm throttle bodies

Also the truck is running good enough that i took it to lunch and in a minute i am going to take it to the store, Short trips probably 30-45 min of running, I can get on it pretty good now even without the fuel pump... But it does fall flat on its face at like 4000rpm now, going down the road its at like 13.5-14.9 area then you get on it and it drops to like 11.2 and just goes all out pulling slowly rising to like 12.5 by say 3800rpm then past 4000rpm it just cuts out doesn't even really go lean its like the fuel pump turns off and it jumps from 12.5 area to 16 and i let go...

More updates later on

and and i'll try to take a video with the cell phone or something lol.

well Bg from what i understand i can only use a 1 bar map. I started asking those questions where i first started and got..well a couple shops have tried to fit a 2 bar and just never gotten it working right... so i don't know that its an option.

I am hoping with the 1:1 fmu fpr i can smooth things out a little between low boost and high boost using it as my variable for fuel supply but only time will tell if that works out. On a side note i just walked out in 20* weather, started the truck, fired right up, first stayed around 10.5 and after a minute or two of driving on my way to work it was back to normal... amazing. STILL LEAKING LIKE A B#$@#.... Not sure what the deal is, i can't find anywhere its coming from and the engine has been in the same spot on the dip stick for 2 days... lol o well i'll figure it out.

Well, If all goes as planned fuel pump is going in tommorow and we'll see what we get. Also picked up a 2 pilar gauge mount ... that i'm not real happy with.. tells you to drill holes through both and use small pegs to hold it on.. not the kinda quality i was after for a 50-60 dollar peice. I also got a AF gauge so make it a little easier to watch as i'm driving.

Were getting there, I was sick last weekend and first of the week and had to work a ton this week kinda killed the speed we were going at.

Seriously, give us some news..... Does it go or did it blow....:rotf:
