Intermittent lack of power and low/spongy brake pedal

88 Blazer, TBI 4.3. Most of the time it runs absolutely great. Great throttle response, plenty of power, etc. Occasionally though, it feels low on power, sluggish, like something is holding it back. Throttle is much less responsive. I have to put it 3/4 of the way to the floor to get it to downshift, even going up a decent hill.
I don’t know how or if it’s related, but when it’s acting like this, the brakes also seem less responsive. Pedal sinks a bit lower than it should, and is very spongy.
There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to the problem. I can go a couple weeks without a problem, or it could happen three days in a row. Run time/heat kinda seems to have an impact, as it happens more frequently during longer drives (1/2 hr or more), but not always. Sometimes it happens right away on a cold start. But once it acts up, it’ll stay that way the rest of the trip. I’ve taken a few quick looks under the hood and haven’t seen anything out of place. I haven’t done any pinpoint inspections/testing because it never acts up when I have the opportunity to look at it. It’s been doing this as long as I’ve owned it. Never been bad enough for me to really worry about getting stranded somewhere, but I’d like to figure it out. Thanks for any and all responses.

I have an 88 jimmy that was having similar problems except for the brakes. No check engine light. My problem turned out to be the Holley tbi I put on it a couple of years ago was to big. I got tired of trying to figure out if it was also the sensors or computer so I put a complete edelbrock ignition and carb and intake so I could control how it runs instead of the computer. Still adjusting the timing curve and tv cable but it's running better than it ever has

Ding ding ding! Oldeerslayer, you get a cookie!

The hole was tight up against part of the wiring harness. Which explained why it only caused an issue intermittently. It was sealed most of the time, unless it shifted. I pulled it away and took it for a drive to confirm that it would run like shit, but it didn’t. However, when I fixed it, the brakes felt better than they ever have. So it was at least part of the problem. I’ll have to just keep driving it and see what happens.

So the truck acted up for the first time since I started the thread. Immediately upon driving after sitting all day at work. Unlike almost every other time, about 10 minutes down the road, it was fine. I’ve also noticed, and kinda forgot to mention, that when it’s running good the idle is a bit rough. Nothing I’m concerned about, but typical for a 30 year old truck. But when it’s lacking power, it isles so smooth I can barely tell it’s running. Not entirely sure what to think of that. I still haven’t had a chance to pop the hood. Hopefully this weekend.

And since you all like pics

I had a misfire during idle about a month ago - noticeable enough that the oil pressure was bouncing up and down, it got bad during acceleration and I couldn't get it going. I'm not sure if it's the same issue since you mentioned yours is smooth when down on power, but I cleaned out my egr valve and it has since stopped running rough. Other than that perhaps it's the throttle position sensor? Hope you get to the bottom of it.

It acted stupid the entire drive home from work today. When I got out it stunk like it was running rich. So that’s another piece of the puzzle. I’m finally gonna get a chance to take a look at it tomorrow. Maybe I’ll find something.
