I need tips, or a walkthrough on replacing an automatic tranny in an 89 S10 blazer.

Okay, here's the deal.

My friend has an 89 Chevy s10 blazer with a 6 cylinder motor, with a transmission that won't shift out of first gear. Upon having a couple of mechanics look, and listen to it, they say the transmission needs to be rebuilt. One claims it's only a "soft parts" rebuilt. Well...we came across another transmission out of another s10, that we bought with a warranty. (just in case it doesn't work).

Our problem is...neither of us feel very confident in installing a new transmission. I've done plenty of work on S10's in general..but none quite as big as this. I believe I'm capable...but I would like a general run-down on what I'll need to expect when I'm pulling the old transmission out, and putting the new one in.

For example, how difficult will it be to get to all of the bolts on the transmission...does the motor need to be pulled first?

In installing the new transmission, what should I keep in mind? I've been told by one mechanic, that if I'm not careful installing the new transmission, I can push something in the motor in too far...I'm not sure what he's talking about. Also, there's a tensioner cable or something that attaches to a hole in the right hand side of the transmission. I'm told that has to be set just right, or else I chance screwing the transmission.

About the most in-depth things I've done on a vehicle are replacing timing chains (on both my 98 chevy s10 and my 80 chevy blazer). Replaced a back axle on my S10. full brake jobs. I've replaced a carburator and intake manifold on my old 80 chevy (though I've never learned how to tune the damned thing...it runs..that's all I can say ;) ). If you've read any of my previous posts..I've damn near pulled my 98 s10 apart troubleshooting and repairing minor to major problems. If after all that, you still think I'm in over my head...please let me know. I don't want to screw up his vehicle..I just know that he'll get charged a ton to have this done by someone else.

I appreciate all of the information you can give me.

hey man i am a mechanic for a living and i know what you are wondering about and its not going to be easy to change the tranny you will most likely have to take the exhaust off and the crossmembers but you need to have the tranny supported before you pull the cross member but the bell housing bolts will not be easy to get to and i dont know what the hell that guy was talking about pushing something through the motor to far never heard of that i am not really sure what cable you are talking about so just let me know if you have any questions i will help to the most of my ability still learning

Thanks for the response.

The cable I'm referring to looks like it might be called a "Kick Down" cable...I found that with a quick search on google..so I might be mistaken.

As for the tranny removal. I thought the top bolts might be a pain to get to...can I not even get to them with the proper extensions?...as for supporting the motor, I'd planned on using my floor jack to hold it up while we're removing everything. I'm curious about the crossmember though. Aren't those welded to the frame? I haven't looked, I just wasn't aware they could be removed. Just to add, the truck's a 2 wheel drive. I know that should make things a bit easier.

Does anyone else have any info to add to this? Not to discount your information Shady, but I was hoping for advice from someone who actually has replaced a transmission in an 85-89 s10 blazer so that I could kinda get a walkthrough for it. I'm tired of being surprised when I do work on vehicles :-\

Thanks again.

the kick down cable is what makes the trans downshift when you Gas it if it isant adjusted proprely the trans will shitf funny. It shouldent be a problemb just keep it adjusted how it is, i dont think thers an adjustment on the transmission end of the cable. As far as pussind somthang into the motor im clueless, and think hes just trying to scare you. The bellhousing bolts are a pain in the ass but not to diffcult.

I've never done one on a Blaz, but have done one on an s-10 a few yrs back..I found the easiest
way to get to the top bellhousing bolt is from the top left corner. You might have to pull some
brackets and such, but it will be easier to get to. Then it's just a matter of undoing the other
bolts that attach the bellhousing to the back of the engine. You want to undo the bolts that
attach the torque converter to the starter ring, and you may have to loosen the starter , maybe not.

You'll want to detach all cables and lines, making which ones go where. Of course you want t
detach the driveshaft from the rear. As far as pushing something into the engine too far, I don't
have a clue, but you DO want to make sure when you install the torque converter it goes on,
then turn it a bit and it will go on further and seat, It's not right if it's sitting outside the mounting
area of the bellhousing. You'll also want to make sure you have fresh fluid in the torque
converter before you install the other trans.. As far as the TV cable or kickdown cable ,
I have a good site that tells you how to adjust it..It's simple to do, but MUST be done right.

If you have doubts about pulling the trans, you can always go to your local
library, to the automotive section and research the process in the books they
have there. You can make copies and use them. It works good and saves money.

the front driveshaft and transfer case are going to have to come off, the case should be whats bolted up to the crossmember (was in my 94, but.. its a bit different than an auto.. to say the least) but the transfer case has to come off of the transmission, then the transmission off of the engine, i'm sure they could come out as one piece, but they arent exactly light, apart would probably be the way to go...
