Here is a little write up/explanation on how to swap your stock CS130D alternator for an AD244 alternator off of most of the full size trucks.

For those of you that NEED a bigger alternator, weather it be because of off-road accessories (winches, lights, etc) or because you need the extra amperage due to a bigger sound system, you would probably upgrade to an aftermarket alternator to meet your needs. Well, unless you are paying $300+ for a built alternator with a good stator and regulator put in, you will loose voltage at idle when you purchase the upgraded one. This is where most people have their concern, especially you off-road guys.

For example, when you put a 160 amp stator in a stock CS130D (4.3L) case, you will get the 160 amps, but only at about 1000 engine RPM's. Our 4.3L's idle at ~550-600, so the output is a lot less, voltage and amperage. I've found that my "built" CS130D only put out 45 amps and 12.8v at idle, when I needed a LOT more than that to keep my lights from dimming at idle.

So, our goal here is to get output (amperage and voltage) at idle as well as our required output at speeds greater than idle. With the AD244, you can have the best of both worlds.

*You can pick up a used AD244 alternator from your local junkyard for ~$40-$50, depending on mileage/condition*

The AD244 alternator came off of several full size pickups, from different years. There were two versions of the alternator made, a 130A version and a 145A version. You can call your local junkyard/salvage yard and ask them what it came off of, how many miles are on it, and what version it is (130A or 145A). Here is a link to everything you need to know (including what vehicles it came off of) about the AD244 (thank juddspaintballs for the link)

*The AD244 alternator will bolt right up to the stock alternator bracket on the 4.3L with NO modifications to the bracket. The only thing that is different is that you won't be using the 3rd bolt that is on the backside of the alternator. The CS130D has this, but the AD244 doesn't. You won't have any troubles with the bolt not being there.*

*The AD244 uses the same wire harness as the CS130D. It is a plug-and-play application.*

Now, I know what you guys are thinking..... "well dude, I need wayy more than 145 amps." That's what I was thinking too when I was doing this mod. I've got a decent sized sound system in the truck and some aftermarket fog lights on my safari bar, so I needed the extra amperage.

Bench tests have proven this alternator to put out 200+ amps at idle when cold. Yes, that's right, at idle.

When the alternator is warm it will easily put out 100 amps at idle, which is way better than the CS130D which is only capable of producing ~40 amps at idle.

It is a slightly underrated alternator (you audio guru's out there know what the term 'underrated' means and how it compares to the quality of a product). I can crank my system to the max and have no voltage issues with it when I'm at idle. I'll maintain a 14v and my lights don't dim.

--------------

Now that you have the alternator, you'll be needing a longer belt. I can't say how long of a belt you'll be needing, but the stock one won't work. If you DO get the stock belt to work (some have) I STRONGLY don't recommend it. It will put a bigger strain on the bearings in the alternator and can cause premature failure. It's worth the extra $35 for a new belt.

*You will need a belt that is 1"-1.5" longer than stock. For some reason, the lengths of belts changed from year to year (even 98+) so you'll have to do a little bit of math and figure it out on your own :p *

--------------

I also highly recommend doing the "Big 3" upgrade when doing the AD244 mod. Stock wiring CAN take the 200+amps that the AD244 puts out, but if you are having problems with it, then it is probably the wiring.

Here are some pictures of my AD244 in action:

13.96 can be lower than most would like to be.... but a stock CS130D would be gasping for air if I was treating it like that.

So, if I had things my way, every s10/blazer would have an AD244 as their alternator, even if they have a stock electrical system.

But as far as splicing the factory wiring to the connector I linked, it's as easy as it looks? Red/black - red/black and black - black right?

Haha touché my friend. Touché.

I'll do a little more research on the subject and then pull the trigger. My lights dim everytime the bass thumps and I can see te voltmeter fluctuate more than I would like so this is definitely a must-have in terms of an upgrade.

I've been searching on eBay for some ad244s and I've come across some reman'd ones although I've heard to steer clear of these. Any validity to staying away from reman? Or will it be fine? More specifically I'm talking about this one:

Yep, there is a guy over on Zr2USA, his name is HenryJ, and he's gone through 2 reman AD244's. I could also bring up a couple of other people that have had problems with reman AD244's as well.

If it doesn't have "DELPHI" stamped right on the case, I'd be cautious buying it.

So in other words eBay is out of the question? Lol. Well summit has the Tuff Stuff ad244 145A for 120 and they also have the harness on there. So that's porbably going to be the one. Heard some good things on the tuff stuff line of products and I'd feel good about buying a brand new one from them plus I can get the harness at the same place. Will be ordering either today or tomorrow and it will ship from summit Monday.

Anyone know the stock length of the serp belt for an 89 s10 4.3L p/u? Pretty sure it's 95.5 but not 100%. It's got A/C and P.S. btw.

anyone?

Alrighty I guess i still got some time to do some research on that specific problem. gotta get my parts first before i get a new belt ya know? Gunna be buying my harness and alt here in a few minutes from summit :). will post back once i receive everything and get to install it

Ok guys I have read this whole topic....3 times, and I am stumped. I have a brand new 145amp dr44 sitting in the garage, but it is the 2 prong plug style. Can this alt be used on my 1993 s10, and if so, can anyone point me in the right direction as far as wiring it goes. the whole angled bolt with a nut in order to mount it I am fine with, but I want to make sure I can wire this up before I start ripping into anything. Thanks for any help you can give.

Ok nevermind my last post, I returned the dr44 alt and went out to the scrap yard. I found myself the ad244 on an H2. now seeing how it is freezing out right now I wont be wiring it up for a little while, gives me a chance to clean it up a little anyway. But I also hope to hear a responce from covert on how that harness works out, as I will need to do something for the same issue.

Responded to your PM Joe!

To let everyone else know whats going on:

UPS was supposed to deliver it tonight but I looked at the tracking number today it stated that "Adverse weather conditions may cause delay". So yea there's UPS for ya.... But anyway, it should be coming tomorrow afternoon and I may or may not have time to do it then but i wll definietely be able to try it out Sunday. I will post back when all the stuff comes and I get a chance to survey the whole situation.

I will keep everyone updated!!!

Alright guys got a update for everyone! Finally got my damn package from UPS! Just have to take a trip to advance and home depot to get my new serp belt and some bolts at the depot. I haven't even opened the package yet so it's a surprise for everyone!!!

I'm pretty sure the dr44 has the 2 pin plug. I may be wrong as I've never seen one but that's what I heard. It is the newer style ad244 I believe.

And I will be getting everything together today when i get out of work. Got all the bolts I needed at the depot yesterday along with two belts at advance auto parts. Hopefully this will go smoothly enough to where i can post up a how to for the first gens with pictures and all that :). I get out of work at 1 this afternoon so keep checking back for updates regarding the install!!

Okay, it's been a while since I've updated this thread. I beat on my ad244 quite a bit (150A)

It works like a champ but due to everything in my truck electric, the alt probably helped to contribute to killing my tensioner. Got me a new one and the trucks quieter on start-up.

Now, I FINALLY ended up warranty/upgrading my cs144 at advance with a new dr44 (possibly g) and got 3 bucks back too.

This dr44 (g?) has the 4 pin csd connector so I think the dr44 is modular to work with either the newer 2 pin cars or the older 4 pins so GM can have 1 alt to keep track of. I have not seen any ad244's with 2 pin connectors that I can recall.

As far as having advance test your alt. Good luck... In order to warranty upgrade I went to an advance and they had to make sure my old alt was bad before giving me the new one. Of course it passed so they told me to piss off.

I drove about 2 blocks down to another advance. Took the backside of the alt apart (plastic cover) and sneakily cut the regulator output off then bent it in such a way where it did not look cut but could be easily resoldered.

Well they "tested it" and it "passed".

I told them their machine is set to "pass" and to keep testing it until it fails or I'm not leaving. (The 3 subsequent tests with me standing over their shoulders failed... imagine that)

So all I'm saying is that the test results will depend on the person running the machine. Most alts get weak when hot. Also they will heat up when under heavy strain (system/lights at idle) and drop voltage/amps at said RPM.

Makes those little dyno sheets kinda useless unless you only run your alt for 5 minutes and cool it back off rinse/repeat.

It surely would be nice if someone here on the boards could make/sell that square--->csd connector for less than 21 bucks plus shipping (insane). I'd buy one just for sport. (for 10 shipped 1st class mail)

Just j/y the csd pigtail and solder in the right parts.

Alright everyone update is here! Got everything hooked up and all is well!!!! No screwy lights and no blown fuses. Just need that wiring harness from painless and use the resistor it comes with between the harness L terminal and factory wiring :)

If anyone requests a how to I will glady do one!

#594 ·
Alrighty. Will work on that when I get outta work today. Prolly around 3-4

#596 ·
Haha well don't update it yet! Just got done witting up the how-to. Just need to take a few pictures, do some spell check (haha), and get the bolt sizes to make it easier for everyone. My girl is getting her nails done at the moment but after we leave here I can start putting everything together for the how-to. I figure I'll make a new thread so people can just go directly to it instead of searching through this in order to find it. Just for organizational purposes ya dig?

Hahaha woopsy :p. I'll get right on that!
