Well finally broke down to day and put my 1997 Sonoma on the dyno. With the great Help from the guys at Delk Performance in Lebanon, TN. here is what I ended up with.

Mods first: 1997 Sonoma 4.3 "W" VIN
K & N FIPK Gen. II Intake
HPP3
2 Chamber Flowmaster
And some tranny mods that don't effect HP

And here we are.

RWHP = 170.56 @ 4200 RPM
RWTQ = 222.33 @ 3200 RPM

We also hooked it to a air/fuel mixture meter and I'm actually running a little rich. I figured I was running real lean do to the HPP3 and opening up the intake and exhaust. Oh well so much for theories.
Not as good as I would have liked but I'm happy with it. Now the question is forced induction on the 4.3 or a 5.7 vortec swap.

Well Later,

Verne

Uh? A big one? Don't know for sure. It was a rear wheel dyno. I thing by Dynometer but not for sure.

lol. Thats what I was thinking. I want to put my truck on one and see what kind of power I would make on one. They dyno I used was a mustang dyno. They are supposed to read lower but I don't know. Anyway, those are good numbers.

I didn't want to put that out there. Delk is mainly a ford Performance shop but do any thing. It is labeled on the print outs "Mustang Dynamometer", just thougt it said that because of there preference.

Kind of on subject, I tangled with one of there Built Stangs last year on the interstate and I was on my 600 Katana. I have raced several Cobra's with no problems but this thing blew my fairings off picked them up and brought them back to me. It was like a Corvette racing a Chevette.

Hey those are very good # considering the mods you have done!
I dynoed last year at 158 rwhp with 206 trq. when my mods were JBA headers, EGR restrictor mod, TB restrictor plate mod, Flowmaster 40 with stock y-pipe, HyperTech Prog. III, 170t-stat, AirRaid Intake , Flex a lite Elec.-Fan, poweraid TB spacer.
I have the 4.3 X

obrien, what kinda mods did you have when you dynoed 156rwhp?

Forgot to mention have the 160 Stat also. Since I now know I'm not running lean I will be doning the Maf Screen mod, EGR Mod, and maybe the the TB Plate Mod. And also be going with MSD 6A but that will be it for a while. Then another Dyno trip but it wont be any time soon. Wish I had the money.

The T stat could be causing the rich mixture.

I had the same problem with a car last year. The thing was running too rich, so we changed everything we could think of trying to lean it out a bit more.

All the time the problem was the 170o Tstat . The coolant temp sensor rears the coolant temp tell the ECU that the engine is still not up to proper running temps (190o +) and the engine is still in warm up mode, thus allowing the ECU to tell the injectors to pump more fuel and create a rich mixture to bring the temps up quicker.

What's the reason for running a below normal running temp Tstat anyway?

Reason. Thats what the shop I got it at said Hypertech suggested but at the time I didn't know any better and now I'm too lasy to chang it back out. In the lower RPM range the air/fuel is perfect it starts going up around 4800 rpms but not a whole lot. I'm hoping with it runnig a little rich that with descreening the MAF it will bring it down some. The guys at the shop said the rich mixture was nothing to worry about because it wasn't too high.

Does any one know if the EGR mod will affect air/fuel mixture?

Thanks,

Verne

Get that 160 degree crap out of your engine.

All you are doing is dumping in excess gas and fwling your plugs faster. pop in a 180 and I bet you will gain a couple HP due more complete combustion.

Thanks "BlazerLT" I will try that as soon as I get off my lazy bottom. But I have a question will I still run the HPP3 programing for a lower T Stat? I can't remember what the stock one was rated at.

Thanks guys,

Verne

Stock is 195.

You can run at 180 which is what they ask for with the HPP3.

You have to understand, your engine is dumping excess fuel (hence it being rich) into the cylinder and trying to warm up. With a cold thermostat, your engine will just keep on doing that seeing it will never ever get up to proper running temperature.

if the stock tstat is 195

why does my truck run 170-180 with the stock t-stat

and i still have the power sucking fan on the front of the motor
:dunno:

oh and i know this is off topic but i sucked the doors of of my buddys ranger last night :racing: :twak: :burnout:

Have done some checking and can not find a 180 stat. My guy at Hunters in Nashville said they don't list on for the 1997 but do for the 1999 and up. Is this the same stat? Where are you guys getting yours?

xtreme_ice good kill. Nothing like taking a ford.

Thanks,

Verne

expecially when they are running their mouth about how strong the 4.0 in the ranger is he great part is that he has an exhaust, intake, and headers and i still smoked him

yeah afterwards i had to celebrate with a posi burn out thru 1st and half way thru 2nd and then turn em over when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and barked em going into 4th

i think thats great considering the only thing i have done is a k&n Drop in and the MAF screen removed

Did some more checking yesterday and still can't find a 180 stat for my 1997 Sonoma. Where are you guys getting yours?

Thanks,

Hypertech sells them.

I just called Summit and they said Hypertech does not have a 180 for a 4.3. Can someone give me the part # or where I can order one from? Everyone I call is saying that a 180 does not exist what gives?

Thanks,

Verne

here is a link to a website that sells 180 hypertech stats. I dont know which model will work for your s10 but you can give them a call and they might know better.

Guys, there are plenty of manufacturers that create 180 stats other than the marked up hypertech crap.

All they are doing is buying from these manufacturers and putting their sticker on it and charging you 15 bucks more.
