Alright, so finally getting this posted here.
Backstory - I've wanted a late 30's 5window coupe for a long time, however having a family also need a back seat. 5ish years ago I sold my last 'toy' a slammed 64 f100, as both I didn't have the time and cash to 'finish' it, and was tired of staring at it rotting in the driveway (rotting is a bad term, it was a running driving project truck, but my new job was now much farther away and using it as a daily again was just beating it up, also the school was putting the kid in needed a hefty registration fee quicker then we could throw it together.
around that time I had seen a couple zolks rods looked at the shape and a couple ideas popped into my head, but life continued on.
fast forward to about a year ago had a 'new' minivan in the driveway and I started looking for parts for it. Wife caught me and the magical phrase "Leave the van alone, fine you can build another toy" (after getting her to repeat into a recording, the ideas and search started)
now, as much as I wanted to do something really outrageous and fast, etc etc ... theres bugger all for real tracks around me, and I really didn't want the constant heart attacks of driving a 'show' car around. so the choice was made for something 'simple' 'cheap' 'fun' . I had started searching for a late 80's regal to make a GN clone and eventually put a full corner carving suspension and a twin turbo'd 3800 in.
Friend and I at work started talking about the project idea and he brought up a bug, I'm really not a vw fan ownership wise, I love the custom bugs, and know how easy they are to be fast, handle well... I just really not a fan of working on them. but this revised the early thought in my head about how the bugs body lines emulated the 30s/40s cars. after brain storming and a full 10 mins of being super pro in MS paint (lol) I came up with this

basically... cut the nose off the bug body, flip it to the rear ... cut the rear wheel wells/fenders out of the body and move them back to the new 'trunk'
I also knew I didn't want shiney perfect body... both to keep the cost/stress down, but also to dabble a little in the rat rod stuff... so some will be welded, and some will be body adhesive and rivets... and alot of primer ...
Now... the chassis ... around here custom made frames (or any frame that has been welded on without certified proof) is a hefty pain in the backside. So, needed to find something to throw this body on.
didn't exactly take more then a second in google to see that the bug body fits the S10's frame rails (ie v8 bugs) ... s10's also seem to be a constant choice to rod body swaps anyways... plentiful, cheap, substantial aftermarket. Another friend at work overhears the conversation and says "if all you need is the chassis, I've got this 87 I picked up cheap for the body on my other trucks (hes got like 3 different hobby s10s 2 race, 1 crawler, that always seem to need body parts) ... I'll drop it off, you strip the body on parts off (ie doors, box, fenders, hood, bumpers, etc) and you can have it"
This also gave me a bit of a thought... If I keep the firewall, and floor of the cab.. steering, brakes, heater .. wiring.. etc etc etc I won't have to hack and adapt.. maybe a little movearound ...
fast forward again... going through college and sourcing bits and peices... S10 is dropped off... source bug body stuff... wait till my summer off between courses . I have an old house where the basement used to be a garage... however current house insurance rules mean no running vehicles in there anymore. so.... had to make this thing not run anymore, in the drive way .. the box comes off as does the gas tank! (on my own I might ask... without damaging the box!)

brought it inside... and went after the rest of the bits!

Then .. out came the sawzall!
