Anyone know what this part is off my 96s10 or if its even supposed to be lose? near the rear of the driveshaft and differential. Im having a problem with my car where its going into gear but when i start to let out the clutch it just starts making a hard grinding noise, i do have reverse and it works fine. Not sure if this part contributes to that problem, or if my clutch is messed up. Any help is appreciated

It’s a device between the diff and transmission that connects the two. If you’re towing, you can disengage the transmission from the diff. They’re used a lot for people that have motor homes and want to tow a run around vehicle. Obviously they’re for rear drive vehicles.

Based on your description, not sure why the disconnect would have anything to do with it...sounds more like typical clutch issues. I'd start by making sure everything with the hydraulics are ok, bleeding etc.
If that all checks out, then sounds like a throw-out bearing -- translation: replace the whole package, throw-out bearing, pressure plate, clutch plate and maybe get the flywheel resurfaced.
