Advice on upgrading steering columns

I have a 94 S-10 with a no-tilt, no cruise column. I am wanting to upgrade this to a tilt column with cruise. I assume(we all know what happens when you do that) that the 88-94 columns will work or should I try to get a 94 specific column for my truck? i know if I do that everything should bolt up fine, right? Or can I go with any 88-94 column? Also what will it take to make the cruise work? Is this a complicated process or should it be fairly simple with the right stuff? Any input is appreciated.

the only thing is that the 95 up steering columns won't actually work with my dash setup. The 94's are kinda 'frankentein' models, in that they have several parts still used by the 93's. THe column is one of them. I assume a 88-94 S-10/Blazer/S-15/Jimmy/Bravada will work fine but just want to hear it from someone else. I still wonder about the cruise though not having cruise from the factory I wonder how hard this will be??? Any takers?

I got a 90 tilt I wanted to put in my 94, but the plugs were different. It sucked because I really wanted the tilt.

I didn't try but it might be possible to switch the ignition switches with current one.

It might have been the wiper plug I can't really remember, I just remember it was different.

so I guess I should go with a 94 specifically then. That is what I'll do. I was just curious so I didn't have to refine my search to one specific year, but no worries. Still waiting on the CC issue...any takers?! Has no one on here truly ever done this? Hard to believe. It's not that big of a deal since I will be doing the V-8 swap in the next year or two but I would like to have CC until then....help.

Its going to be a peta in my book on the cruise because you have to hav e the extra throttle cable and the vaccum box unless you can find one with all the components already in it at a junkyard it isn't worth the money.

im parting out a 93 bravada
i was gonna keep the steering column as a spare for my 89 s blazer, but they dont interchange for what ever reason
i work in j/yard, i searched on the computer & those 2 years have diff interchange #'s
but i didnt think to check to see if it'll fit my 94 noma

ill check tomorrow & ill let you know what other years interchange with the 94 model

i know what you mean on the red headed stepchild of 94
the guage cluster, dash bezel, knee panel, auto tranny & ac compessor are all 1yr only
& that's just what i've found so far

I just put a 92 blazer 5spd tilt column in my base model 89 s10 other than having to swap the wiper motor everything worked good.

Adding cruise to 94 is simple. I added it to mine.

As for the steering column, yea, its 1 year only as stated above. Also, the steering column has to be unhooked under the hood for it to be removed. Found this out the hard way.

As for the tilt, do you have an auto or manual tranny? Because I'm not sure if the manual trannys ever had a tilt column in 94. I've yet to find one, still looking though.

Thanks guys for the advice. Mars will a column out of a 94 bravada work or does it need to be S-10 specific? I have found one for a 94 S-10 and one for a 94 Bravada and can get the better deal out of the Bravada column should it work. Deathphoenix my dime is an automatic so I have found some columns on ebay and in the local junkyards(due to cash for cars) but most are overpriced there. I have two good ones I have found on ebay w/ tilt and cruise. What will I have to do to make my cruise work from a model that didn't have it? It's a four-banger too....

So there are fasteners under the hood as well DP? I haven't even attempted to take my current one out....is there a sticky on this?

Go to the link in my sig, it has information about how to remove and install the steering column. As for the s10 specific, I believe it is as the bravada was still a first gen and the 94's have a second gen column even though it looks like a first gen.

To add cruise, it's very easy, the wiring is there, you'll only need the switches and the module for under the hood. As for the switches, if you get a column with cruise, plug it in and you'll be good to go. If not, either buy the stalk at a parts store or get a junk yard one, they pull right out. Then just tie the wires into the harness in the dash and you'll be good to go.

Here are some pics of how I wired my stalk.

The wiring there is for cruise, but you don't notice it or see it unless you look for it.

did you just buy a stalk for a blazer that had cruise on it? I found a 94 S-10 column with tilt but no cruise and was just thinking of ordering a new stalk from that year blazer that has cruise on it...would that work?

#14 ·
Yea, that lever pulls out from the steering column. Just grab the turn signal and gently pull it straight out. You can buy the levers brand new at parts stores for around $35 I believe. I just pulled mine out of a s10 at a junkyard though. I believe they are the same for first gens, this style is used on other gm vehicles also.

I drilled the holes for the wiring to go through instead of messing with running it inside the steering column.

Cool i figured that would work, thats what I'll so. I wanna replace my stalk anyways since it is severley faded/worn along with my headlamp switch as well. Quick question DP, I found a 3.42 posi rear axle assembly out of a blazer with rear discs, my truck currently has a 4.10...how's yours run with the 3.73? I was kinda thinking of putting the 3.73 gears in it instead since in a year or so I am going to put this 283 I am building in it mild, i just wanted some extra input on how yours ran with that rear set up. I don't think I've ever seen a 4 banger with a 3.42. Mine is actually pretty quick with this rear set up....maybe I'll put the 4.10 gear back in it, but it is still a 4 banger...

ok so I found a column that is in my possesion for a good deal($85). The column is from the same year as mine (94) and is auto(like mine) but has tilt and cruise. My question is with finding a column that already has cruise what else do I need for it to work?

#19 ·
To make cruise work? If that's what you are asking, then you just need the module that goes under the hood. Plug it in and it should be good since you have an automatic.
He'll also need the drive cable from the cruise module, as well as any necessary bracketry for either piece.

Ive also seen a lot of people hack up and body work auto columns to work in 5 speeds (not sure if your auto or 5 spd, skimmed through). Same goes for friends of mine with floor shift autos.

#18 ·
yeah that's what I meant. Thanks for the advice. Can I get that part at a parts store or will I have to get it off the donor vehicle? I had to drivealmost 2 hours round trip to pick it up and I got other things to make it worthwhile.

You can get them easiest at the junkyard. I bought mine for $40, you need the complete assembly under the hood, it mounts to the firewall with 3 screws, the indentations on the firewall by the brake booster are where the screws go. There should be a connector thats capped over there, its plug and play. Make sure the module is correct cable for the throttle body. But that should be all you need since you have the cruise control on the steering column already.

Iv got the under hood cc motor out of my 94 SS CPI. I dont know if its good or not b/c I never drove it when I first got the truck. You can have it just pay the shipping. Ill get you a couple pics of it if you want.

I have a 4 banger, i am not sure if it will work or not.....I won't tear into this project until Wednesday probally.

Did you use your stock gauge cluster on your SS build? Just curious, I have been looking for an SS gauge cluster for FOREVER and thought if you went with a aftermarket gauges then i could buy yours. If not that's cool too.

#23 ·
No i didnt use the stock cluster but I did use the backing plate. I still have everything for it though. I can get you some pics of what is left of it if you want. The SS gauge pack wasnt anything special other than it has a tach.

#24 ·
well there is something a bit different about the SS cluster: it's the only cluster to come out in a 94 that has a 100mph speedo, all other have 85mph speedos. i have one w/ tach but it's 85mph and I want the 100mph cluster. Anyways get me some pics when you have some time. Thanks

#26 ·
yeah, i never really understood why they started making the 85 speedos in the 80's-early 90's. The speed limiter doesn't kick in until 96mph and it only registers 85? WTF. Anyways it's not like I drag race but I would like to know how fast I am going those occasional times I am on the interstate and need to get around trucks....hopefully I will find one soon.
