So im doing a freshen up on a 2000 4.3 that i am puting into my truck since the last one threw a rod. The old engine was a 98 i believe. I replaced the timing set as it was sloppy and the new one is still sloppy.
The timing gears and chain on my 98 look way beefier! And tighter. The 2000 4.3 timing gears are super thin and lightweight. Looks smaller than a bycicle chain. Could i take the beefier set up from the 98 and throw it on the 2000. The 98 set is way thicker. The chain is thicker. Just overall beefier. Everything looks to be the same proportions betrween the to.

You sure that chain isn't a aftermarket chain? The one on the left looks like a cloyes timing chain.

Just looked at the application data on Rockauto and it seems in 99 GM switched to the bicycle chain to reduce valve train noise. Some of the better 99 up replacement sets include a tensioner to compensate for wear.
Glad to know the 92-98 set works on 99 up engines.
I'd think valve train noise isn't a problem on a cheap old pickup truck.
Besides who can hear it over the leaky muffler and the over sized tires howling.
Reliability is a more important issue.
It also appears that you can use the newer chain on the earlier engines but need to change covers. Which theoretically you replace every time anyway.
