Ok so after thinking about it for a minute I decided that I need to go ahead and find those parts and get them ordered tonight. I just ordered 24244615 (the clutches and steels), 7-CS (high RPM 3-4 spring kit), 77754-41 (HD 2-3 valves), and 8 new check balls.

I figured since check balls are less than $1 a piece, I would replace them since I'm replacing the separator plate anyway. All new balls riding on an all new plate.

I ended up getting 77754-41 for $34.95 shipping and all from a trans place that sells on ebay. The only reason that I was being so picky over that $9 is that I just emptied the truck fund account. I'm waiting on some checks to come in from some clients but until they do, I'm tapped out so I wanted to get all of these parts so that I can have stuff to re-assemble while I wait on the checks to pay for the torque converter and the fluid.

Are you putting in a stock replacement converter, or something aftermarket? I can tell you from experience, if you buy something aftermarket, get something good. A Yank, PTC, or....maybe a Precision. I know there are a few others, but honestly, the list is short.

I'm actually going to run a brand new stock 4.2 I6 Trailblazer converter.

This makes me a bit nervous because I've never run a bigger stall before. I don't need anything too big because I'm still on a bone stock 4.8 on a bone stock tune in a truck that might weigh 3300lbs. I normally wouldn't change something that I'm not familiar with since I'm changing a bunch of stuff in the trans. It complicates diagnosing issues BUT I don't want to pull the trans again later.

I wouldn't be afraid of that at all. I have heard several guys run those, and their really not "big" by any stretch of the imagination. It should be at most a 2300 converter, and on a 4.8, it probably won't be even that much. Depending on how in tune you are, (which I think your pretty astute) you may not even notice it. Like I said, I think you will, but the general person, probably wouldn't.

That's good to know man. I plan on changing this truck up a lot this year. I was just looking over the fittings and hoses that I need to complete the A/C system. I'm thinking after 4 years it's time to finish that lol.

Ok I just got my got my TransGo high rev 3-4 kit in and I've got a question.

Looking over the instructions, it shows that if the 3-4 spring retainer doesn't have the bottom ring, it rids on an aluminum piston that has those little nubby things on it. If it has a bottom ring then it rides on a steel piston.

My transmission does not have the bottom ring on the bottom but has a steel piston. It was built like that last time and my new piston is steel as well. Is this ok or do I need to order a new spring retainer or piston?

Not yet. It will be one of the last things that I order.
please don't... I made that mistake in 2005 with my 5.3 build. It was in my truck less than a week before I bought a yank.

Especially in a 4.8L you will see zero gain over a stock one in my opinion.

Yanks TT Series is affordable and works well.

I can totally skip it if you don't recommend it. To be honest, I had no intention of adding any kind of higher stall converter in here right now. Mainly for 3 reasons. 1, I don't think I really need it right now. 2, I don't want to spend the money on it. 3, if I can't hook what I have right now anyway. I just had someone tell me that they can could get me a new 4.2 converter for the same price as a stock unit and that it would be a small bit higher stall.

I hate to sound like a total cheapskate here because I'm not trying to be. I'm trying to stay within a certain budget because I BADLY need a new rear end. Mine has 290,000 miles on it and the pinion seal is leaking pretty bad now. The new rear end that I want is an S10 8.5 4wd width so that I can pair that with the C6 vette wheels that I want. Then eventually a set of cal tracs and a truetrac or something.

The way this works is that I got a new job that pays more. I also do a LOT of freelance work. The day job money goes to saving up for a new house so I have to play with the truck on freelance money. The problem with that is that it's not consistent money and there is about a month gap between invoice payments from clients. So, what I want to do is only what I need now to make it live with the power that I have and do anything that might be a massive pain to do later, such as the trans internals. For the torque converter, I honestly just planned on putting a stock one back in it for now which I can get for about $150. This gets me back on the road and doesn't kill my rear end budget. I figure it's not too hard to change out later if I get the extra cash and I don't think I can benefit from a better stall right now with the risk of killing that rear end.

so... lol with that long drawn out story, what would you recommend? Just a stock replacement or do you think the Yank TT is what I should go with? $200 I can swing, $500 is going to set me back about a month or better.

Ok thanks to the help of James (blackx) I now have a plan. I'm going to flush the torque converter that was in it and just put it back in for now. It's got low miles and no contaminate other than some friction material from the 3-4 clutches. The reason for doing this is to focus funds on more important things such as getting that rear end replaced. I can always drop the trans and upgrade the torque converter later when I can actually utilize a higher stall converter.

Anyway, I installed the TransGo 7-CS spring kit yesterday. I didn't take any pics. It basically looks exactly the same accept the 3-4 return springs are now yellow lol. Those are some stuff ass springs too. It's crazy how much stiffer it is now. I also learned that even though the 3-4 return spring cage upper and lower parts are hooked together in stock form, you bend the hooks out of the way so that it can't hook back when using the 7-CS kit.

My 3-4 clutches are the biggest holdup right now. I should have the 2-3 shift valve and new check balls today but those clutches haven't even shipped yet. I found kit (24244615) on amazon and it was listed as sold and shipped by amazon which usually means even with normal shipping, I would have it within 3 days. Unfortunately, it's been 3 days and it hasn't even shipped yet. I don't know what the hold up is because I worked in an Amazon.com warehouse before and this is NOT their peak season lol.

woohoo, I got the sonnax 2-3 shift valve and the new check balls in today. I also got a payment from an invoice so I would be ready to get it all back together if my damn clutches would ever get here.

been on hold fora bit because of the clutches but they are supposed to be here monday. I've gotta buy more wire for my welding machine to finish the modifications to the spring tool. Those new springs are CRAZY stiff. So when my clutches get here and I get another spool of wire I'll be making more progress.

Got the new clutches and steels in today! Ready to get this thing done but not sure how much time I'm going to have this week. Work has me busy.

Ok, I tried using my home made tool to install the springs in the input housing but damn those things are stiff! So I just ordered the compressor tool for it. It wasn't but $27 dollars and should be in by this weekend. I still need to order the new apply plate and backing plate for the 3-4 clutches. I want to get the springs compressed and the snap ring installed so that I can test fit the new clutches with the old backing and apply plate to see if I need to order new sizes or not.

I know that this has been a slow process. I'm very busy with work related stuff right now so I haven't had as much time to mess with it this week but it's moving forward, just slowly.

Thanks man. You are always looking on the bright side of things lol.

I got the valve body 95% torn down tonight. I cleaned all of the valves. I've got some more to tear down and then wash it and drill the hole for the 2->3 HD shift valve kit so that the overruns apply in all gears when in D3.

To be honest here, I've got a day job, I work afternoons and weekend for a company that I helped start and I have contract work for 2 other companies. The one that I helped start is in the due diligence phase of an acquisition deal. That's eating up a TON of my time. That's why I'm slow right now. It's the old adage, money and no time or time and no money lol
