Name your scan tool?

I have an older OTC Nemisys Touch. I don't have it updated to the newest programming. It had been updated by the previous owner trough the 2017 model year. So it still work's for everything I work on!!!

I would like to upgrade to a Launch. I think it can be used as a tablet as well. That way I could put HPtuners on it.

I bought a HPtuners MPVI3 interface last September.

Can someone explain the differences between the multiple versions of the launch X-431 besides the variation in price from from $339 to $3599.99? Seems to be a myriad of models. How do you decide which to buy?

I don't know the full deal on the differences. Some are bidirectional, some lower priced one may not be. Some have an 8" screen others a 10" and one model is a 13". Some can be used as a tablet. some have more memory.
The one I showed in post 1 is a newer model of what my Nephew bought for use at his dealership job. It's a good all around unit. He told me to not look at the pro model because it come with all the global cables that I would never use.
What I do know is the ones from Amazon are considered "global units" . The USA units are mostly from distributors, Like Matco, Mac, Advance Auto, O'reillys.

Lets see, I have a real deal GM Tech 2, an older Genisys that had the ability to do GM sps programming(hard drive crashed on the computer linked to it), a Cornwell Genisys , a Launch CRP123x older model, Hp tuners and EFI live.
What are the file extensions for EFI live? I'm trying to get the ability to upload HPtuners, EFI live & Tunercat files to our new tuner section...

I primarily use a knock off Tech2 and recently got up to date using the latest GM Techline interface to update modules, etc. It's nice that they've made it compatible with Windows 10/11, but was definitely learning how to access the web interface all over again.

The Torque app on my phone comes in handy when I get an engine code and not at home. It's also a great data logger and with the customizable dashboards makes oddball engine issues easier to diagnose.

All my tuning is done with TunerCats. Can't really buy it any more, but I'm fortunate to have been grandfathered in.

Autel Diaglink....reads codes, erases codes, does some live data,....
I use it once every few months....it's not that intuitive, so I end up having to relearn the thing every time.....
Relatively inexpensive (~$100)....

I do have an Autel AL519 for using on the fly. Doesn't have much data-stream... Good code reader/emission monitor though

Surprising how many of the guys with a lot of knowledge and/or experience have a Tech1 or Tech 2 or an equivalent Snap on or both. I bought a 120V AC adapter cable for my Tech2 so that if I have to start or shut off the engine I don't have to start over. Otherwise going thru start kills it and you have to power it up again and go thru the whole half dozen screens to get back to where you were.
Since HPT has scanner software I guess that can be considered a scanner also. In which case I have 5 different scanners. Use the BAFX and Samsung phone for simple code reading or resetting.
My go to for OBD1 is a long out of production AutoXray EZ Scan 5000. I saw one today for sale new on Amazon for $500.
For all intents and purposes Autoxray ceased to exist in November of 2004 when they were bought by SPX and just disappeared shortly thereafter when SPX shifted their business focus to industrial products.
The big drawback to them evaporating was no free updates in the last 18 years and no support or repairs.

How do I find this? I'm not computer wiz when it comes to this stuff. I bought it used so I could swap the vin for my S10 when I did the LS swap.

When you try to open any file, It has a .pdf, .png, .jpeg after the name of the file. That is called the file extension. the file extension identifies the type.

AT the very bottom is says "File of Type" *tun & *bin. .bin is most universal. You used to be able to convert HPT tune files to .bin, but they did away with that a few years back. They want you to go thru them for everything. Not sharing things with EFILive owners.

The dealership tools are hard to beat. For swapping modules and getting everything up to date on the various cars I've worked on makes the price I paid for the Tech2 more than worth it.

And the amount of screens on the Tech2 is a royal pain. I have the power adapter, but forget to use it too often. Gotta love how it shuts down the tool when you plug in the 120 adapter

I should get a battery charger for tuning/diagnostic sessions too. I've drained enough batteries I've had to kick myself a few times.
