Hi guys

I'm currently working on my 02 S10 ZR2 that needs a transfer case input shaft seal replaced and I've got a few questions that I hope someone can answer.

1.) Do the bolts for the bearing retainer need some sort of thread sealant or thread locker when reassembling? Here's a photo of the bolts that I'm referring to (using a magnet as a pointer).

2.) Will ultra black RTV be a good sealant to use between the bearing retainer and the transfer case? Here is a photo that shows the area that I'm referring to (using a magnet as a pointer):

3.) I purchased the following gasket that goes between the transfer case and the transmission:

Can i place this gasket between the transfer case and the transmission without applying any gasket sealer or ultra black RTV? If not, which sealant would be best? And should it be applied on both the transfer case surface and the transmission surface?

Thank you!

When it comes to a gasket maker I prefer using Permatex #2. It's a non hardening gasket maker that will reseal itself if it ever breaches, unlike silicone which will never reseal. I would use this on the threads of the bolts too. Smearing a thin coat on the extension housing gasket would not hurt either, but it can be put on dry so long as the surfaces are good and clean. If you cant get the surfaces clean then yes use a sealer.

1) If the holes go all the way through the case, put sealant on them. If they're blind (don't go through), they don't need it.
2) Ulra black is a good choice for that spot.
3) I don't use any sealant with gaskets, especially RTV. It's not necessary in your application, and it will be much easier to remove the gasket in the future if you don't use any.
