Spend 15 bucks on the tool it saves major time and headaches. Before I had the tool i used a piece of steel that had three holes in it. put that on the center and put the wheel nut back on. then put some nuts and bolts into the end holes and used them to press down on the plate to pop the ring up.

I'd recomend the tool tho just get it from autozone.

You have a tool on your truck

Open the tailgate and unbolt the lock bracket on the bed itself.The one with the square hole.put the square hole over the shaft and run the steering wheel nut down tight.works everytime!
