When i start my 83 s10 2.8 i can run it for a long time but once i turn it off it has a hard time starting again so i have to wait til later that day for it to start

Sounds like ignition control module is over heating. It’s a part under the distributed cap. This info is relevant for the 4.3s, I’m not familiar with the 2.8s. But from your problem, it’s sounds like the icm.

How do i stop that from happening
Like Rhotpursuit said, get a new one. Once they start overheating it’s time for a replacement. At the parts store when you pick up a new one, get a tube of 100% silicone grease, or bulb grease, or dielectric grease. All the same thing. Smear it all over the bottom(metal) of the new icm and install it. Let us know if it fixes your problem.
