Hello,
I purchased a Driveworks water pump (part 58-521)from Advanced auto and it seems to work fine, but after a while I noticed it became rusty on the outside.
Is this normal?
I know it was an inexpensive water pump and I get what i pay for….
I am wondering if rust that could be inside will pollute the engine.

There is a 2yr warranty if defective and I’m wondering if this makes it defective?

(Thanks again to everyone contributing information to this website, it has helped me a lot!)

Normal to get rusty as they are normally raw cast iron. Some of the better ones have an epoxy coating on the outside. Rust is normal for cast iron. I will normally throw some paint on a new pump purely for esthetics. If it bothers you there are several people that make a coating specific to seasoned aka rusty cast iron. The trick is getting them clean clean clean.

Thank you, some of the rust seems to get powdery and drift on other parts, i will throw a litte rustoleum paint on the outside
Paint on some vinegar first, then rinse, to neutralize the flash rust.

You could try some rust converter instead, it’ll leave a nice black, strong, non-rusty coating. Just brush it on, wait a bit, wipe it off, repeat, and re-install the pump.
