Excuse me here, as I am stuck inside on a cold, rainy day.
Is there a way to use a short style water pump on the newer vortec engines?
My application is a 4.3 V6, and no I don't have a reason.
It is running an alternator and power steering pump. No AC.

I'd want to do it for it being mounted closer to the engine, further farther radiator.
No good reason why.
Also. If there isn't a short pump made for reverse rotation, then my other accessories would need to be changed.

That Summit kit is for using a pre 68 short V-belt clockwise rotating on post 68 engines v-belt engines. It's for moving the pump closer to the radiator. I'd simply buy the right pump.
The only shorter water pump that I'm aware of for serpentine belts is the C4 Corvette pump used in conjunction with a Merc Cruiser 5.7 pulley. So the belt still lines up with the other accessories. You gain aprox 3/4", but then need to mount electric fans. Which are more than 3/4" thick because the Vette pump doesn't have the threaded nipple for the fan. It gets costly for no gain. I've used it on a swap. That complete cooling system was all new and ran over a grand. Plus a lot of work, but I now have a 1/4" of clearance between the fan motors and the pump on my V8. Wouldn't even consider it for a stock engine. The stock fan and pump work seamlessly from the factory and if properly maintained will cool adequately in 100° temps.
