S-10 Fuel Economy Questions 2002 Club Cab 4.3L

I live in the high country in Colorado 8850 elevation here in a small community. My truck is only getting 12.3 miles per gallon on the average. I get less than 200 miles out of a tank of gas. My truck was bought used a year ago. Have 157k mileage. ANYONE know of cheap way to increase my mileage. My daily drive habit consists of a five mile daily trip to take my granddaughter to her school. Very little or no highway miles, just my local store shopping trips, that about it. I will answer any questions presented to me .
Thank you,
Hank W

That's a pretty cool readout! I didn't know they had those.

Does that plug right into the OBD2 port? So I'm assuming it's taking data directly from the ECM. Far out!

How hot does the coolant temp get? Because this rig is supposed to use a 195-degree thermostat.

If it's not warming up to full operating temp, it definitely will get poorer mpg.

Another consideration would be if the engine coolant temperature sensor was out-of-cal. Obviously the ECM only knows what temp the sensor reports. So if the sensor is off, that certainly could affect operation. You could use an infrared thermometer on the engine to get a good idea of operating temps.

Looks like this engine uses the same ol' 2-wire brass temp sensor that my Stone Age 3.4 60-deg V6 uses. I've had trouble with those before, as well. If you were to shoot the metal body of that sensor with the infrared thermometer, you'd get a pretty good idea of how hot it's running. There's also a check you can make with an ohmmeter and thermometer.

But maybe that temp was before the engine got fully warm. Just wondering.

The warmest I have ever seen is 187 degrees never any higher. This readout information is a by product of the android radio I had my son put in to update the electronic features I wanted . It blue tooth connect for cell phone, gps,, two USB drives for data, videos, music, jpegs, my son still needs to hook the dashcam and reverse gear back up camera, all the stuff in new cars if you want to pay the bucks. It was a amazon purchase for two hundred. I bought an adapter for antenna and a new faceplate, love it really cool update, reccommend for anyone wanting to bring a 21 year car back to reality.

Mmmmm maybe I just need a newer thermostat rated at 195 degrees. What what the cause and effect on my engine and driving habits, that would make. Although really like the looks of the new insert, with my fake bow tie I tried to duplicate

All kinds of cool views!

BTW 187F is probably pretty close, with the 'stat opening at 195F, your average temp will likely be a bit lower.

I don't understand how this link (and other similar ones) relates to the thread, or even truck matters in general. Perhaps it's better aligned with the Off Topic section.
Well now, with my vehicle here in the high country here, I would say that bad weather and road conditions ice and snow is one of the biggest contributors to having bad Fuel Economy and driving Safely. My mileage this time of the year is always worse than in the summer and no matter what I do to my 21 year old Chevy S-10 nothing can change those above condition that many of us are having in many various parts of the country. I just thought the topic of weather and road conditions should be addressed since they are so relevant to many of us now. Thanks for your input and have a good day

Weather and road conditions are indeed variables everywhere, but they have been widely and commonly known facts since, well, basically the advent of wheeled transportation, and certainly not limited to being just 'relevant now'. And, posting conditions for the 'high country' are only applicable for your limited locale. However, I still remain puzzled as to how (for example) photos of wildlife and ATV's correlate to vehicular mileage?

OK.
Good Evening Everyone here's an update about my Fuel Economy..
Today is Febuary 28, 2023 the last day of the month. I filled my tank today 13.9 gallons 163.9 miles traveled, regular gas price today $3.99 per gallon of the lower grade octane. Due the math 11.7 miles per gallon today, for the month. Last month before I made my changes my mileage was 12 1 for the month. The two changes I made was a clean air filter and the grill insert for a warmer vehicle. So no big change on mileage. I will now accept this and realize my life situation daily driving is what it is!!
I am not experiencing any known running condition on the truck. I don't have the money or the desire to spend any on unknowns at this time. Thank all of you for your inputs and suggestions. Have a great day, enjoy life, Work Safe, BE SAFE.
Thank you,
HANK

Hey, at least the grille cover looks snappy! 😹 Thanks for the update.
I've Had 6 4.3 V6 S10/Blazer/jimmy's, Never got more than 18 MPG with any of them No matter what weather Conditions. They were an Easy way for GM to Produce a V6 off of the The Proven V8. the Engine is Good, Not Great!

If you cannot trade in your truck for a better mpg vehicle which is recommended if MPG is a big factor. Even the 01+ Silverado with 5.3L is going to get better mpg than your crew cab 4.3.

It won't be easy to get better mpg without dedicated to help mpg tune also as @bk2life says.

Other option is Efan, might be bit out of reach for expense and downtime to do it, may take a long time to break even but it helps.

Overall, you're better off just saving the money just for any future maintenance/repairs. 4.3 can only do so much on a budget to improve mpg.

It's a great looking truck though!

Yep if I really want mileage, I should drive a Beetle. Have you seen the conversion kit Smyth Performance makes it is awesome. Most kits are around 4k for the diy. 12k more than the donar car if you want them to do the work. Requires about 40 hours to do most cars, check them out they do about 6 models of sedans. Maintains the original frame so everything stays the same as well as mileage and such just minus the back doors, cool Right
