Guy's new to the forum and thanks for having me, I bought a project zr2 I guess you would say lol, engine was knocking but didn't know the trans was bad as well, any way how much of a pain in the butt are these to pull out together, guess the transfer case would be dropped from underneath. THANKS!

My preference is to drop trans out the bottom. With that out of the way I pull the hood and take the engine out the top without touching the rest of the body panels.

Others prefer it out the top with enough angle or pulling the front sheet metal.

Usually drop the TC, then trans , then straight up and out with the engine. Because of the straight down deep oil pan on 4x4's the engine has to come nearly straight up initially and that's not going to happen with either the trans or cab in place You gotta drop the trans or pull the cab way up.
Only time I pulled all 3 together the cab was removed first. It's almost worth it if you are replacing all 3. Lot of work pulling the cab, but so is separating all 3 and then putting them back together. And I say this owning a hoist and a 2 stage trans jack.
Down side is you need a hoist or a crane to lift the cab and front clip. Again don't separate if you don't have to.

Thanks for all the info, not a certified mechanic but done a little of motor pulling, head swaps, cam swaps, engine swaps, Ls swaps etc so dont mind pulling wrenchs but was just wondering on this one, just not really a 4x4 guy, is the transfer case a pain. THANKS!

An NP233C transfer case isn't that heavy or hard to pull on an 00 ZR2. As long as you have a jack to support some of the 75 lbs. weight. Once you have both driveshafts out only 5 bolts hold it to the transmission. You have to lift the rear of the trans to get to the bottom one. Do it first. Helps to have 2 jacks. Then slide it back being careful because it wants to rotate once loose. Takes a little maneuvering to slide it back then forward a bit once separated. Extra hands can be helpful until you've done it a couple times. Mechanix gloves save on cuts and pinches. Ratchet strap it to the jack for final lowering.
