I have a 98 sonoma 2.2 2wd and the rear end has just started whinning pretty loud...the faster i go the louder it gets. Some people have told me its the spider gears and some say the ring and pinion....also anyone know if it would have the 7.5 in or the 7.6...pinion in it. I already know its a 4:10 because its a GT5 code in the glove box.

no real way of telling until you get inside there depending on what has failed. Metal chips could have messed up your gears and carrier. I would consider a posi and make it a upgrade instead of a repair.

If it whines while going forward, its NOT the spider or side gears. Most likely its the Ring and Pinion gears being out of alignment. If you let it go too long, the gears will be junk along with all the bearings which will be feeding on the metal debris coming off of the gears.
