Hey guys,

I seen a few similar or related threads but circling back for some more up to date info as those threads are at least a decade old. 1998 4.3 ext cab 155000. I hear a rattling or maybe even a metal like tapping noise only when accelerating say above 25 mph or so. Does not do in idle whether in neutral or park. Have not really heard it as prominent while reving but will pay better attention to that next ride. Cannot really hear on highway above 60 but not sure if its just drowned out by highway noise. Doesnt do it when decelerating either. Just got it a week ago or so and the owner had documentation of an engine rebuild and he said the cat conv. Was replaced, not sure if that has any relation. Do not hear when reversing but obviously that isnt at high speed. Sorry for dragging on, just want to throw all the info i can as i know many of you on here have prob seen it all or close to it. Thanks, Ray .

Start by checking all the heat shielding around the exhaust. They come loose over time and can rattle.

I kinda have this issue... some sort of slight rattle I can hear when launching the truck (since I have a manual RPMs go up a bit when launching) and most notable at a certain RPM around ~2000 between 10-20 MPH. Only can hear it with windows down. Not loud enough to make me nervous. I suspect catalytic/EGR/Heat Shielding is loose/bad. Honestly, I've been ignoring it since it seems exhaust related, and the truck has more pressing issues in my case. But I'd suspect mine is exhaust side and yours probably is too. So yeah, check head shielding and exhaust stuff.

If I hear the sound I could tell you exactly what it is but it an be a lot of things ,1 heat shield for exhaust, 2 if you have 2.2l manual transmission sometimes the fuel lines mounting bracket brake an they slap the floor of the truck, 3 broken exhaust rubber mount, 4 broken transmission mount, 5 drive shaft center stabilizing mount that's just a few things it all depends upon the model if I heard it it would be lot easier to diagnosed hope this helps good luck
