1989 extended 4x4 4.3

So I have the plastic thing popped back from the steering box far enough to take the bolt off of the lower part of the shaft at the steering box but the plastic boot does not go far enough back to see the rag joint.

I am pushing the shaft toward the firewall and it does compress but not enough to clear the stem of the steering box.

What am I doing incorrectly?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Rag joint repair: Cannot compress the steering shaft enough

So I put the screw back on and re mounted the steering shaft.
I am going to start my other job (ball joint and half axles).

What might I be missing in getting this doggone thing compressed and off of the steering box.
thanks anybody.

I used a small ballpin hammer and just kept smacking it up then moved it down, and smacked it down (out). Good luck man!

You can as well take out the pinch bolt up by the tulip joint where
it goes into the firewall. That will allow it slide up a bit more if
needed.

Here is mine in a 2wd. Taking the pinch bolt out won't give you a whole
lot, but you don't need that much to slip the spline connection off the
input shaft of the box. Mine is a 92

Here is the lower.

Yeah mine looks a little different. I will take both suggestions and let you know how it goes.
