I was fortunate to not have caused any disasters during a limited number of poor decisions to drive after drinking in my “youth”. 20+ years ago, I was stopped on an Interstate Hwy at night/early morning for an existing accident. Unfortunately, a man with BAL of 0.16 driving a pickup did not even brake before plowing into the back of a minivan stopped at the back of the line of vehicles behind the accident. 70+mph-to-0mph in 0.xxx seconds. A family of 4 – was in the van: parents and their 5 - & 8 – year old daughters. Believe everyone was belted-up in the van, but that is far too much brain bouncing around inside the skull for 2 – small children. Was 1st person in the van to “help”, but unfortunately was essentially untrained and generally, super immature. I was of little to no help to the family, unfortunately. 1 – child died in the hospital ~3 days later. The other made a partial recovery after emerging from coma, but had/has lifelong, negative effects from traumatic brain injury. Am not certain, but believe the parents recovered physically.
