Hopefully this doesn't get too long winded, but details are everything.

88 GMC Standard Cab 4x4
4.3l

Current problems are:

  • Spark knock (pinging) under acceleration
  • Full blown detonation during acceleration under load (ie going up a 6% grade)
  • Slight hesitation/stumble under normal acceleration
I'm sure all of these issues are related, either directly or indirectly.

This all started with a random Code 32 (EGR), which was remedied by replacing EGR, EGR Solenoid, and cleaning the clogged solid passageways in the intake manifold.

Next up was the infamous "Check Gages" light, remedied by new oil pressure sending unit.

Also replaced temperature sending unit at this time.

Rebuilt throttle body, checked for any kind of vacuum leaks, checked compression, performed a tune up (cap, rotor, plugs and wires), checked timing. You get the idea, covered the basics.

What is my next step? Pulling the heads? Valve job?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

go to gm dealer and buy the top engine cleaner, in the liquid can. cheap. it will clean deposits out and make it run better. you might try higher octane gas, also.

I agree with Rick. Depending on the mileage on the engine you might have a stretched timing chain. Just something to think about.
