Ok Folks, I have a 1998 S-10 and I have recently turbo'd the 2.2l. 5 spd manual trans.

I need to replace the clutch (again). I am not hard on the clutch and often shift without the clutch but I drive a lot of miles though (she's got 500k!)

This is the 5th or 6th time replacing. When I bought it at 90,000 miles the clutch had just been replaced so the would likely say a 7th time! Usually one of the springs has loosened or come out completely but the disc and flywheel usually looks good. Interesting there is always a couple disc options like 5 spring and 4 spring. I can't remember now which one had springs popping out of place but we went with one over the other last time. The throw out bearing often makes a shuddering noise or buzzing vibration after so long and feels like its going out. It's a loud horrible noise too but usually intermittent. Whole thing feels brand new for about a year and then starts acting up. Only good thing is the clutch had a lifetime warranty from Autozone and has never cost me anything but time and busted knuckes (can't seem to get away from that) but it's always a really fun job and can never wait to do it again (sarc).

Now the pilot bushing is always worn out and sometimes cracked. One time missing altogether. This seems to me to be number one culprit of the failures.

So now my question is this...Am I getting a fair amount of use out of each clutch and all this is normal or should some parts or whole set up get an upgrade?

Pilot bearing instead of the bushing? Maybe a better bushing? My thought is the clutch and alignment of the shaft etc is likely the cause of the wear on the clutch. Pilot goes and then everything else goes bc of movement. The pilot would be my number one supect since it always looks the worst and there is not a lot of wear otherwise except for springs and intermittent bearing buzz / vibration. The trans shaft front bearing was never a lot of movement and never leaks fluid. Its always been dry in the bell. I am however likely changing the front bearing this time.

I am thinking a performance clutch upgrade, especially with the turbo?

Throw-out bearing upgrade? better setup out there?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I am looking to replace soon. Getting Dyno tuned in about a month. Or...maybe I should resign to just changing every year or two and throw a clutch replacement party!?

Both. Depends on how long the light is or how much traffic. I know cerain situations are going to be more wear. I believe I use the clutch in the most efficient manner but the real question is the upgrades specifically the pilot bushing / bearing and the throw out bearing.

I don't like the fact this setup has the throw out bearing riding the clutch 100% of the time. That seems to be a great way to wear something out quicker.
