For future information:
The cooler lines / filter adapter is different for 2WD and 4X4. The 4X4 filter adapter is on the fender. Its filter nipple does not "unscrew". The 4X4 nipple does not have the hex. The 4X4 filter nipple can not be used in the block.
The nipple in the 2WD lines / filter adapter is mounted on the engine. Its filter nipple is the 14081300 that is used directly on the block.The 2WD nipple has the hex. So the 2WD filter nipple can be used.
I have no idea why the OP encountered difficulty with this conversion. I've done several, it is always straight forward once the correct nipple (14081300) is on hand.
