You're going backwards with going to a mechanical distributor.

Timing can still be controlled with the original distributor and a Sniper, you need to bypass the ICM and use the Holley coil driver.

However, Megasquirt is a better, and much more adaptable option, especially with your future plans of going LS, where the Megasquirt can be retained for the LS. You'll be using a 2bbl Sniper on your 2.8 which will be a waste of money, since it won't be big enough for an LS later on.

I understand what you’re saying but I won’t be able to program it… otherwise I’d or partial to MS.

Why can't you program it? the software is available for free (paid version adds more functions), there are manuals to help set it up.

If the options are Sniper or nothing, just stick with the OEM stuff and save up for the swap you want to do, and I say that as a fan of Holley Sniper systems (the 4bbl versions for the right V8 applications). As I said the Sniper isn't really self tuning, Holley's claim here is misleading and most cars left with the default settings end up not running well after a while, and need manual tuning anyway.

3.4l Camaro engine would get you to 160hp, and have much better fuel injection as well.
Yup. With the right fueling and go fast parts, you'll get much better than that with a 3.4!

Problem is if I swap I’d want a 4.8 LS lol
You could certainly do that. I’m not saying that’s off the table for me in the future. And that simply because that’s such a good platform for a swap. I just like how the truck is still shiz easy to work on. Plus, anyone (with skills) can swap a V-8 into a truck but not everybody has something that runs like this truck does for what it is. And as far as a daily goes it’s pretty hard to beat.
