My 1985 Blazer hadn't been started in five years, and it had only been driven 75 miles since 2011. I haven't tried turning on the AC. I can turn the compressor itself by hand, but it's not easy to turn. It's a Harrison compressor and probably not original. My late brother who owned the car was very careful about maintaining car AC systems; in fact, he left behind enough R12 to recharge the system several times over.

Are there any steps that need to be taken -- or that can be taken -- with a compressor that hasn't run in years other than turning it on and seeing if it runs or blows up?

How hard should an AC compressor be to turn by hand? I've never had to do it before.
