I had a shop tell me not to drive around without the front skid plate that guards the oil pan and transfer case because they say it's part of the suspension. They didn't say how. My guess is like a torsion bar of sorts? With the skid plate off I honestly don't see how it would be critical if it is part of the suspension. I have it off because 2 bolts fell out and I don't want it just hanging there until I get replacements.

Umm, short answer - no, it's not. While the OEM skid plate is physically near the suspension, it is not an integral or essential part of a suspension system. It's a stamped sheet metal 'shield' for protection from debris (and possesses no 'torsional' properties). Whoever told you that shouldn't be working on vehicles in a "shop". I'd avoid that place like the plague. That sounds like a place that would try to add a "blinker fluid change" or change the tires' "winter air" to "summer air" to a service ticket. Bozos.
