Hello All

What do you call the power plant of a vehicle ?

Engine or Motor ??

When I went to college for Marine & Small powered Tech. they taught us that:

Engine is fueled

Motor is electric

Engine = converts thermal energy (heat) into power
Motor = converts electrical energy into power

That being said, I use "motor" all the time in place of "engine", it's been racing slang for a long time.

The outboard on the back of my speedboat is considered a "Motor" it's certainly not an outboard "Engine"? That sounds stupid and nobody says that. My outboard runs on gasoline, lots of gasoline... 2mpg baby!

Generally speaking, in a motor vehicle, its a motor if it has windings and an engine if it sucks, squeezes, bangs and blows. I knew a chick like that once, but we called her skank, but I don't think that applies.
