Get rid of those gross Zr5 wheels and give them to me.
I was going to say the same, except I've already got a set of those grotesque wheels! :D If that were my truck, I'd be inclined to keep it the way it is - looks pretty sharp. I can't tell for certain, but it appears that the rocker panels need some help, and maybe the front bumper corner. The headlights' fitment looks off too.

Yup! The old "Didn't get the lower tabs in right" headlight error.
I see snow in the pics. The box sides, rockers and cab corners are going to gradually get worse.
Good ole salt.

First I'd come buy parts off me cause I have a rolled one. Second get some mud tires and a little cheap lift. Headers and a single 3" exhaust. Home made cold air kit and then see about some sort of tuner so you can get all 4hp extra out of that wild 4.3! A cam, exhaust, and a tune would make a noticeable difference. I took those rims off mine and put them on my 90 blazer after a nice black repaint. And really look at how old it is and look at newer chevs and dodges. Yours is pretty sweet. Get the cab corners fixed and run it for the next ten years.

An 03-04 GMC ZR5 has a much cooler front end if you can find one. With the Envoy style lights and one piece bumper and valance design.

Apparently the 03-04 GMC ZR5 has it's own headlights half way between S10 an Envoy.
They are definitely not the 2 piece S10 headlights and turn signals. W/ or w/o fog lights.
Also lot nicer bumper arrangement than the cheesy S10 setup.

Fix any rust like you really mean it. I live a 1/4 mile from the ocean, salty air, salty roads; I run different trucks summer and winter, and have run mud flaps on my winter trucks. Fronts keep the sand from blasting the rocker paint off and packing the body mounts with sand, rears prevent the frame rails and rear bumper from getting packed with salty sand and rotting away. Not to mention it packing up around the brake and fuel lines and rotting those. Makes all the difference to keep the sand from packing inside everything, gives your truck a fighting chance. I tossed the molded "custom fit" ones, and cut a flat set from some semi-truck flap material, so it extends in as far, and up inside the wheel well, as possible and doesn't stick out and look like *hit. If you already have mud packed up in there, it's worth pulling the bed once to clean it all up and get a grip on it before it's too late. AWDirect has the flap material; CRC makes a great marine grade waxy undercoating.

Well it's a GMC, sooooooo yeah. They don't look much like the Chevy stuff in any variation. And I don't think those lights are ZR5 specific either.

If this was yours what would you change
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Firstly, I believe 2nd Generation years are 1994-2004, FYI. So, this 1st gen subforum is the wrong location.

Secondly, unless you are going to fix the rotten sheet metal, I generally maintain the same mindset as flopshot. Hard to tell, but looks like right rocker is already rotted. If so, I would likely change nothing beyond implementing some rust-slowing strategies. To make an analogy, I perceive investing much labor and funds into cosmetics for vehicles that already have significant rust rot as “slapping lipstick on a pig”. This excludes hobby restorations. In those cases, it seems prudent to address the rot first. However, I fully understand people maintain different mindsets.
