[How-to] Install floor shifter and console from a SUV into your pickup

Ive had this thing sitting around for quite some time, just never had the opportunity to put it in. Well the upcoming show motivated me, and since it seems to be a pretty popular mod lately, I thought it would be a good subject for a how-to...Here we go!

First thing you need is PARTS. Heres a list of parts I needed to setup the new shifter with my old tranny:

All these are for a 97 Jimmy.

- Floor shifter cable
- Tranny bracket
- Shift lever
- Small clip
- Large clip

ok time to whore it up some more lol

ZQ8, is the white thing with the metal rod (with the black connector on the rear) in this pic the cylinder you were talking about?

you said you removed it right? the other end of it can be seen on the lower left side of the same pic, did you just unplug it from there also?

is this the pin you were talking about for the shifter?

yes

Yes I took it out(don't remember why really.) made sure the cylinder was out all the way and then put the cover that has 3 torx screws holding it on back over it so it would keep the cylinder out like it's suppose to be. Also just be sure to have the shifter bracket(piece that the pin is in) in park so you can get the key out.

Yes, looks like yours has a little black grease on it, just knock it partially out with a punch and hammer then use something a little smaller than the pin to remove it the rest of the way. Once it's been knocked with a punch it's pretty easy to get out, I think I just used a philips driver
im wondering if anything really needs to be removed but the shifter stalk? it would still be in park technically. that white piece that you say to remove wouldnt know the difference i dont think...maybe ill try it and see, cant hurt right...lol

and for the pin, what part will be coming out exactly...the copper looking base of the shifter (with the spring inside)? sounds like a stupid question, but what keeps the car thinking its in park if thats gone?
I honestly can't remember if I left the copper piece on there or not, I think I had to take it off because the column covers wouldn't go over it. I know the spring stays in there though.

You can probably leave the cylinder like it is, I took mine off because I thought it needed to be and then I had to re-install it. You're probably fine leaving it that way.

I'd test fit the column covers, but before you bolt them on I'd drive it a few miles and make sure it's working right.

ok, update....im 99% done.

got the pin out and i removed the entire copper shift base piece. i removed the cylinder piece from its location, but left it plugged in near the ignition. this is the thing that keeps the key in the ignition; once you remove the stalk and copper base, there is nothing keeping the exisiting shifter assembly from rotating clockwise, which doesnt allow that metal shaft from the white plastic piece to extend - the truck doesnt think its in park, and you dont get your key. as i said i have it loose now, so the shaft can extend and retract...i need to find a permanent fix to this though as id rather get rid of it or wire it appropriately. ZQ8, i wasnt able to remove it from the ignition side...i got the connector loose, but i couldnt get it off. it was still stuck on something, how did you get yours off? also, with it off, are you able to remove your key?

got the cable installed, which was a total bitch by the way with 10 year old carpet that doesnt want to move lol. now, im having the same problem as you ZQ8, i show all gears but Park. im going to read over what you did in some earlier posts to see how to adjust it. any tips, let me know!

Shifter cable:
I put mine in park and pulled the cable out from the trans gear selector on the trans. Removed the horseshoe pin, pushed the cable out of the bracket then up through the floor, the new cable goes through that same hole. Put it through the bracket, put the console shifter in Neutral and move the trans gear selector to the Neutral position. Pull the cable until it tightly goes on the selector, but doesn't move it out of position. It should now be adjusted and shift easily. Mine was really tight and this cured that.

Mine still doesn't display P on the gauges, but I checked it from underneath and it is going into Park as far as it will go. When I put it in the P position inside the vehicle it blinks P once, same thing with when I crank it.
this was the post i was looking for. i left mine in park on the shifter and the transmission when i connected the cable, didnt mess with neutral..doesnt feel tight like you said either. i guess i need to see how to adjust the cable...im going to try messing with the old one to see if i can figure it out.

I pushed the plastic prong in and just pulled it out, it seemed like it had a long shaft on it, I don't think it was that hard to do really.

I never got P to show up right, but I made sure and it's in P. I put the shifter in N and then the bracket on the trans in N and fit the cable over the bracket and then cycled through all the gears. I believe I put the shifter in P then got under the blazer, pulled the cable off, and tried to move the bracket towards the front of the truck, I couldn't move mine any so that's how I know it's going all the way into P.
alright. can you get your key out after removing that cable entirely?
yep I left it still attached to the cylinder though, just took it out of the iginition.
hmm. well if this way works alright ill just leave it as is. im getting a column cover off a member here, so i just need that cupholder liner. also, there is a small clip on the original cable that i used on the floor shifter.
Yeah I zip tied mine, and then realized the one I needed was on the cable that went to the column shifter.

I still need a boot and the cup holder liner as well.

no dice, i wasnt able to get that yellow/white piece out of the cable to adjust it; ill try it again when its warmer. i drove it around and all was fine.

i did find a good spot for my thumb drive:

Well that's neat, does the plug actually go somewhere?

Did anyone else's console overlay tabs break like this?

Most of the ones from s10warehouse look like that too. Figures it was just something that happens to all of them. I'll know soon as I found one to install, just have to remove it first.
yup, mine is like that too.
Did you do anything to help resecure it?? glue...etc..???
