I have a 3.4 F-body engine in my '90 Trooper. Very happy with it. An awesome upgrade to the little 2.8, which struggled to pull this 3800-lb SUV around.
I've improved the 3.4 with upgraded air cleaner, Holley Big-Bore TBI and bored intake, SBC 1.6:1 roller-tipped rocker arms. Upgraded the exhaust with a dual-inlet cat (eliminated the restrictive exhaust wye), 2-1/2" cat-back exhaust with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler (has a nice growl but doesn't drone).
It drags the Rolling Brick around pretty well! I wish it had more low end, the big exhaust cut that back a bit. It needs a Comp Cams "252" torque grind, then it'd be perfect!
The Camaro 3.4 with SFI has around 160hp, and the unfortunately-now-NLA GM Goodwrench crate 3.4 with the equivalent of a Comp Cams "252" cam made 160hp and over 190 ft-lb torque with a "wheezy" S10 carb and intake.
One S-10 dude over at the defunct S-Series.org (R.I.P.) made 187 RWHP with his hot-rodded 3.4.
So they have a lot of potential. Smoother and more compact than a 4.3 and should hold their own against a stock one. 4.3 does make more torque for sure.
I've been running my 3.4 for over 20 years and wouldn't part with it. Great engine.
