I am having some difficulty removing the oil galley plug that sits behind the camshaft sprocket on my 96 2.2L.

All the advice I could find online said to drive a small screw into the hole and then use a claw hammer to pull out the plug. Unfortunately I have tried that, and each screw I have driven in has just pulled out, widening the hole in the plug but failing to budge it. Does anyone have a plan B to remove this thing?

The only thing I can think to do is spray some PB Blaster in there to loosen The bond between plug and hole, but I didn’t know if PB Blaster in there would damage the engine, nor do I want to push those metal shavings into the engine either.

Pic attached to show its current state.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
