Hello everyone. I recently just picked up a 96 S10 With the 2.2 and a 5 speed. The current issue its having is it seems like it has no fuel at the intake. After sitting for a day or to it will start if you crank it, but only for about two seconds then it dies and wont restart. It WILL run if you spray starting fluid in there. Ive checked the spark and its good, ive used the fuel pump test connector to check that its running and it does. I can even hear fuel pushing up to the front of the vehicle when i have the pump engaged. There's no kinks in the line and the fuel filter is brand new. I don't have a pressure tester or the ability to get one at the moment. Im not an expert with this engine, first time working on one to be honest. So im trying to get help from the experts and see if there are any common issues i need to start with, or things to look out for. Im of the mind that maybe i have a weak fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator, but i wanted second opinions before tearing into it. Thanks for any advice in advance!

Before you tear into it, get a tester from an autoparts store...they rent them for free. You've confirmed it will run on starting fluid and the filter is new...time to test the pump pressure.

I think you're right sir. Im inclined to believe its the regulator as i can hear fuel coming up to the fuel rail. But, i know it could still be a weak pump. And i don't want to just throw parts at it. So im gonna go pickup a pressure tester tomorrow, as all the stores are closed around here today.

Are there any specific things i need to look out for when testing the fuel pressure? And if you happen to know them what are the specs? Ive foiund two different pressure specs and im not sure which is correct. One says it needs to be between 40 and 50 and the other says i need 55 or higher at the rail. I want to make sure im doing this right. TIA!

The later flex fuel models have higher designed fuel pressure. Non-flex have lower pressure, but cannot remember what specifically. Probably mentioned 100 times in different posts here. IIRC, there may not be a Schrader test port for the 96. If so you will need to temporarily splice in a tee somewhere.

Mines not a flex fuel that im aware of. And yeah i saw the post about the schrader not existing on this year. I plan to check the fuel pressure where it goes into the regulator ti make sure the fuel pump is working, then if thats good im going to replace the regulator. Can get it for like 30 bucks here. If that doesnt fix it ill disconnect the injectors and make sure they are all functional. Thats the roadmap i have for it anyway.
