Truck is a 1987 S10 extended cab 4x4, automatic transmission.

Okay I have done a bunch of reading on this site about using the Bravada or Astro van right side shaft to eliminate the axle disconnect system. Really it seems like the best solution to the problem.

The best write up I have find so fast is here. the bravada front axle shaft upgrade?!?! This one is missing the pictures I would assume because its so old.

Is there a more current write up? Will this model work on my 1st gen 87? Are there better solutions (other then the cable operated front end)? Thanks for any and all input.

You can simply pull the cable out at the actuator under the battery and use a small pair of vice grips to hold it. Many times in the past this has gotten guys with vacuum issues temporary 4wd
until they had time or the place to diagnose the vacuum system. Usually a rotten hose or failed actuator because the vacuum sucked ATF into it.
As far as working on an 87 you need to find a 90-96 Bravada or Astro with bolt on CV axles.

Thanks for the info on the Bravada / Astro info and limp home solution.

Im trying to eliminate a future problem, and wondering if anybody has tried things like welding the collar in place, or used something else to force the front axle into a permanent lock position.
