take a cardboard template of the area you need filled. go to a machine shop and have them fabricate a piece of alluminum or diamond plate for you.

I would assume it would be ok to weld. There is alot of bends and lines around that area so it is pretty strong. (as opposed to the middle of the door.) Just take your time and go SLOW. weld one tack at a time and let it cool down. then do another and let it cool down. trust me. itll take a while to weld up, but you will save yourself from doing alot of filler work.

I haven't finished off my filler plates yet, so no pictures, but if you check this month's Minitruckin' I think there's several good shots of S10's with the shaved mirrors.
